How to prevent Food borne disease?
A food-borne disease involves the unintentional or deliberate
contamination, of food that impact human health. The global
incidence of food borne disease is difficult to estimate, but as
per the WHO, every year there are about two billion cases of
diarrheal disease worldwide and around 1.8 million people die
from diarrheal diseases each year. A great proportion of these
cases are attributed to contamination of food and drinking
water.
•
Wash your hands before and after preparing food.
•
Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces frequently, and always
use clean utensils.
•
Separate raw food from ready-to-eat food in the refrigerator
»» In refrigerator ready-to-eat food like salads has to be
stored on the higher shelf.
»» Raw food should be stored on the lower shelf. For
example, raw eggs, raw meat, etc.(The lowest shelf is
normally a vegetable chiller tray)
•
Keep hot food hot and cold food cold.
•
Do not keep cooked food in room temperature for more
than 2 hours
•
Buy food from reputed sources
Consequences of food borne diseases can be serious and can
cause human loss. Other implications or costs of food borne
diseases can be serious debilitation or disability, chronic health
problems, personal and domestic inconvenience and loss
of income. With our food supply depended on increasingly
complex and global food chain, we have to ensure that all
adequate measures are taken to reduce food borne diseases as
much as possible. Here are some things that you need to know
to prevent food borne diseases.

Food prepared by someone who hasn’t
washed their hands properly
•
Food prepared using utensils that are not
clean
•
Food items that were not stored properly
at the right temperature

washed properly

Eating undercooked eggs
or meats
•
Drinking water that
was contaminated
by animal or
human waste
Nausea
Vomiting
Fever
Diarrhea
Abdominal pain
