Musculoskeletal system
Definition
The skeletal system provides support and shape. The major organs are bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments.
 Bone provides support and protection, stores minerals, and forms blood cells in marrow.
 Cartilage is a flexible, connective tissue that is made up of mostly water.
 Tendons are tough bands of fibrous connective tissue that usually connect muscle to bone.
 Ligaments are a sheet or band of tough, fibrous tissue connecting bones or cartilages at a joint or supporting an organ.
Role of molecular imaging
Molecular imaging radiopharmaceuticals such as technetium-99m medronate, technetium-99m oxidronate or florine-18 sodium fluoride
can be useful in the skeletal system by imaging the bones to help delineate areas of altered osteogenesis.
