CAROLYN GIANTURCO
PROFILE
Carolyn Dooley Gianturco studied at the University of Marywood and Rutgers (Master of
Arts in Music History) in the USA. She obtained her D.Phil. in Musicology at Oxford under
the guidance of Sir Jack Westrup.
She has served as a Chair of the University's Music Department at the University of Pisa,
where for many years she taught History of Music. Her research has centered on Italian
17th century music with, as she describes it, "some excursions into the 16th and 18th
centuries."
In 1987, she helped establish the Tuscan Association for Research into Music Sources
(President 1987-2002), in order to catalogue music in Tuscany. An off-shoot of this is the
series of publications she founded and edited, "Studi Musicali Toscani." Former President
of the Italian Musicological Association (1997-2001) and Vice-President of the
International Musicological Association (2002-2007), in 2012 she was elected member of
the Academia Europaea.
The volume she categorizes as her "first important book" was Mozart's Early Operas. She
has also been the general editor of 16 volumes of music (a definitive series on 17th
century cantatas), and has contributed more than 40 articles to musicological journals, as
well as over 100 articles to music encyclopedias.
Perhaps her greatest passion, however, has been uncovering the life and music of 17th
century composer Alessandro Stradella. It is a pursuit she has continued for the past
quarter century. She wrote the first documented book on Stradella, for Oxford University
Press and compiled a thematic catalogue of his more than 300 compositions.
In 2000 the Italian Ministry of Culture agreed to sponsor publication of all of Stradella's
music in 42 volumes, and Carolyn Gianturco has been named President of this National
Edition (11 volumes had been issued so far).
