THE GESTALT PRINCIPLES
and THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DESIGN
FIGURE-GROUND
NEARNESS
Elements which are grouped together create the illusion of shapes or planes in space,
even if the elements are not touching. In this
example, the circles are close to one another
appear to form groups, whereas the seperate one does not look grouped
GOOD CONTINUATION
This principle states that people have a tendency
to group stimuli into continuous lines and patterns.
Like in this example, most people see the libes
following the middle example rather than the last.
Figure-Ground is known as human’s ability
to identify a Figure from the background.
In this example, most people see a face
because of the shading that appears to
be in the foreground.
SIMILARITY
Similarity refers to the psychological nearness or proximity of two shapes in relation to others. For example,
our brains generally group
the circles in this image together.
SIMPLICITY
Objects that have the shape of a
familiar object are more likely to
be seen as a Figure. For example,
the shapes on the left are most
commonly perceived as a square
and a circle, and not three unidentifiable shapes.
