Display the following: 48, 49, 50, 51, _ _ _ _ _ , 53
A sk: What number is missing? How do you know?
The missing number is 52. The pattern is counting up by ones, so
the number between 51 and 53 is 52.
Display the following: 7, 9, _ _ _ _ _ , 13, 15
A sk: What is the pattern? What number is missing?
The pattern is odd numbers, starting at 7 and counting up. The
missing number is 11.
Display the following: 20, 22, 24, _ _ _ _ _ , 28
A sk: What is the pattern? What number is missing?
The pattern is counting up by twos, starting at 20. The missing
number is 26.
Display the following: 5, _ _ _ _ _ , 15, 20, 25
A sk: What is the pattern? What is the missing number?
The pattern is counting up by fives. The missing number is 10.
S ay: Let’s continue this pattern. What are the next eight numbers in
the sequence? 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 …
The next eight numbers are 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, and 65.
S ay: Today’s episode looks at counting by fives, just as we’ve been
doing.

The goal of the episode is to identity numbers on a number line by skip
counting by 5.
E x a m p le :

S ay: The episode will ask us to either fill in missing numbers on a
number line or hang numbered tags on a number line. Pay attention
to the intervals on the number line. What are we counting by?
Each tick mark represents 5.
Depending on the episode’s problem, ask:
How can we determine how to fill in the missing numbers?or
How can we determine where to place the tags?
We can skip count by 5 to figure out the numbers on the rest of the
number line.

Ask the students to answer the problem that the episode presents.
Enter the students’ answers, and click on
.
If the answer is correct, the episode will proceed to the next question.
If the answer is incorrect, the instructions will wiggle. For a missing numbers
question, the incorrect entries will turn brown. For a question with tags, the
incorrect tags will wiggle and fall from the number line.
The episode will present a total of six problems.

In advance, prepare tic-tac-toe boards for your students, where each
of the nine spaces contains a multiple of 5, such as:
Distribute tic-tac-toe boards and colored tokens to each student.
Explain that you will call out a number. If a student has that number
on her board, she will cover it with a token. The first person to
cover three in a row wins.
Play tic-tac-toe multiple times. Students can swap boards between
games.

S ay : Let’s count by fives, all the way up to 80.
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80…
A sk: If we are counting by fives, do we say the number 30?
Yes, if we are counting by fives, we say 30.
A sk: If we are counting by fives, do we say the number 18?
No, we do not say the number 18.
Display the following number line:
S ay: Tell me how to number the rest of the tick marks on the
number line.
The missing numbers are 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60.
