Algebra I Vocabulary
Algebraic Expression
A sentence combined of one or more numbers and a variable
along with one or more arithmetic operations.
Axes
Two perpendicular lines that are used to locate points in a
coordinate plane.
Best-fit Line
A line drawn so it is close to most or all of the data in points in a
graph.
Binomial
The sum of two monomials.
Coefficient
Constant
The numerical factor in a term.
A monomial term that lacks a variable component.
Cartesian Coordinate
Plane
Domain
The plane containing the x and y-axis.
Elimination
A method of solving a system of equations that uses addition or
subtraction to eliminate one of the variables to solve for the other
variable.
Equivalent
A term used to indicate that two or more quantities are the same
value.
Equation
Exponent
A mathematical sentence that compares expressions linked by an
equal sign.
To find the value of an expression when the value of the variables
are known.
In an expression of the form xn, the exponent is n.
Factors
In a multiplication expression, the quantities being multiplied.
Functions
A relation in which each element of the domain is paired with
exactly one element of the range.
A mathematical sentence comparing two expressions that are
linked by one of the following ,  , ,  .
Evaluate
Inequality
The set of all x-coordinate values in a relation.
Like Terms
Terms that contains the same variables, where the corresponding
variables also are the same power (exponent).
Linear Equations
An equation whose graph is a line.
Linear Parent Function
yx
Monomial
A number, variable, or a product of a number and one or more
variables.
A correlation between x and y that are related in an opposite way
(as x increases, y decreases).
Negative correlation
Ordered Pair
A pair number used to locate points in the coordinate plane.
Point-Slope Form
A form of a linear equation; y  y1  m( x  x1 )
Polynomial
Positive correlation
A monomial or sum of monomials.
Product
Proportion
Quadrant
A correlation between x and y that relates in the same way (as x
increases, y increases).
The result of a multiplication operation.
An equation stating that two ratios, rates or fraction are
equivalent.
One of the four regions into which the x and y-axes separate the
coordinate plane.
Quadratic Parent
Function
Quotient
The result of a division operation.
Range
The set of all y-coordinate values in a relation.
Rate
Ratio
Relation
y  x2
a
of two quantities a and b that are measured in
b
miles
different units. (example:
)
hours
The relationship
A comparison of two quantities or number that are measured in
the same units.
A set of ordered pairs.
Rise
The vertical (up and down) change in a line graphed in the
coordinate plane.
Run
The horizontal (left and right) change in a line graphed in the
coordinate plane.
Scatter Plot
A discrete graph that shows two sets of data plotted as ordered
pairs in the coordinate plane.
When an algebraic expression contains no parentheses or like
terms.
The ratio of change in the y-coordinate to the corresponding
change in the x-coordinates. Also known as “rise over run” or the
change in y over the change in x.
The equation of a line in the form y  mx  b
Simplest Form
Slope
Slope Intercept Form
Solution
Substitution
Systems of Equations
A replacement for the variable(s) in an open sentence that results
in a true sentence.
A method for solving a system of equations that uses substitution
of one equation into the other equation to solve for the other
variable.
A set of equation (two or more) with the same variables.
Systems of
Inequalities
A set of inequalities (two or more) with the same variables.
Trinomial
The sum of three monomials, assuming that like terms have been
combined.
Variable
Vertical Line Test
A symbol, typically a lower case letter that is used to represent an
unspecified number.
If any vertical line passes through no more than one point of the
graph of a relation.
x-coordinate
x-intercept
y-coordinate
The first number on an order pair.
Y-intercept
The coordinate at which a graph intersects the x-axis
The coordinate at which a graph intersects the y-axis.
The second number of an order pair.
