Your Snapshot Itinerary Day 1: FLY U.S./Phnom Penh Day 2: Arrive Phnom Penh Day 4: FLY Phnom Penh/Siem Reap Day 10: Drive Siem Reap/Battambang Day 12: Drive Battambang/Phnom Udong/Phnom Penh Day 13: FLY Phnom Penh/U.S. J-TERM STUDY/TRAVEL COURSE 2017 Cambodia Tentative Activities: Visit and explore three of the most import cities in Cambodia Phnom Penh (the capital), Siem Reap, and Battambang. Visit Choeung Ek, the memorial to the infamous "Killing Fields" under the Pol Pot Regime. Explore the stunning Angkor Wat, a Hindu/Buddhist religious site and the largest religious complex in the world. Participate in two ceremonies performed by Buddhist monks, one a good luck blessing for your trip. A homestay in a Cambodian village and service work in the village school. Plus, more exquisite Buddhist Temples, elephant rides, and a visit to a jungle wildlife sanctuary. ASTU 381: Cambodian History & Society RELS 381: Religion in Cambodia Instructors: Todd Munson Tim Brown Last updated 4/4/2016 Cambodia Course Descriptions ASTU 381: Cambodian History & Society (Munson) This January travel course explores Cambodian history, culture, and society. We will explore the rich civilization of this Southeast Asian nation, from the famous ruins of Angkor Wat temple to the ruinous era of Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge, with a special focus on the challenges facing contemporary Cambodia. By the conclusion of the course students should be versant on the most salient aspects of Cambodian history and culture, in addition to being seasoned travelers to that region of the world. There are no prerequisites. CAR: NonWestern. RELS 381: Religion in Cambodia (Brown) This travel course to Cambodia will provide students a thorough introduction to religion in Cambodia. The primary objective of the course is to explain religion in Cambodia as a composite tradition composed of the interaction of three dominant strands: indigenous religion, Hinduism, and Buddhism. To accomplish this objective and prior to departure for Cambodia, students will examine the key religious developments of four historical periods: 1) The Formative Period and the Indianization of Cambodian Religion/Culture, 2) The Medieval Period and the Ascendency of Theravada Buddhism, 3) Cambodian Buddhism in the Modern Era: Colonialism, Independence, and the Khmer Rouge, 4) Contemporary Religious Practice in Cambodia. Visits to religiously significant sites in Cambodia will allow students to both apply the knowledge they have gained and appreciate the complex religious heritage they are encountering. There are no prerequisites. AOK: Religion; CAR: Non-Western. Prerequisites None ASTU 381 and RELS 381 will be traveling together. Students are encouraged to enroll in both courses.
