Solutions:
Question 1
Solution 1:
a. Let d = the number of dimes and d - 6 = the number of quarters
b. Then 0.10d = the amount of money in dimes 0.25(d - 6) = the
amount of quarters.
c Equation: 0.10d + 0.25(d − 6) = 34.55 and d =103
Answer: There are 103 dimes and 97 quarters
This was using decimals which without a calculator . You could change the answer to be
in pennies like the next solution.
Solution 2:
a. Let x = the number of quarters and x+6= the number of dimes
b. Then 25x = the amount in quarters and 10(x+6)= the amount
In dimes
c. 25x +10(x+6) = 3455
25x +10x+60=3455
35x+60=3455
35x=3395
x=3395/35 =97 quarters so x+ 6 = 103 dimes
