Welcome to AP/IB Environmental Science! Our summer work is going to
provide you with background material for the intro and land ecology portions
of the course.

1. Please read the listed sections from our textbook (Environment 6 edition, Raven, Berg,
Hassenzaal). You will need to get a book from the school store. Please complete the
reading assessment before school starts. You may print a hard copy and answer, or
copy electronically and answer in Google Docs/or Word doc.

**You can pick up a textbook in the school store before June 10 or in August before
school starts.
2. Aspects of our course are constantly being observed in the world around us. Pay
attention to news sources and over the summer find at least two articles that can relate
to issues in the environment. Find a credible article that is ecology related and another
that relates to waste management/recycling and/or energy use. You will be providing
me links to the article and a brief summary for each describing the major points
and your thoughts about the topic.
If you have any questions, send me an email. Have a great summer! I am looking

Intro Reading Assignment
Chapter 1: Introducing Environmental Science and Sustainability Read pgs 9-21
and answer the questions below.
1. a. Define sustainability in your own words.
b. Describe an activity that you engage in that is an example of something
sustainable.
2. a. Describe a global commons.
b. List 3 economic consequences of depleting or degrading that resource.
c. How is poverty linked to the tragedy of the commons?
d. What are two solutions that Hardin suggested to solve the tragedy of the
commons?
3. Describe an example of sustainable development that you have observed or read
about; if you haven’t observed or read of one, describe one you can imagine.
4. Systems operate in a state of dynamic equilibrium. Describe the two different
types of feedback mechanisms and the effect of each on the system.
5. Experimental design review- What is the difference between an independent and
dependent variable?
Read over the Environmental Laws, Economics and Ethics pages (24-33). We
will be covering the people and laws as we move through the year. Answer
questions 7 and 8 below.
7. What is the difference between conservation and preservation? Give one example
of an area that has been set aside using each philosophy.
8. What is environmental justice? Describe an example of an environmental
injustice.

Define an ecological niche. What is the difference between a fundamental and realized niche? 6. Define the competitive exclusion principle and resource partitioning. 7. Be able to describe the role of a keystone, native, non-­‐native and invasive species in the environment. Be able to provide examples. 8. Explain the relationship between species richness and ecosystem services. 9. Compare a specialist species to a generalist species. State how the range of tolerance may differ for these types of species. (may need to look this up on-­‐
