How to make –ING forms We add –ing to most verbs, without changing the base form: Wait for me I am sitting down. I am sleeping on the bed. Two consonants don’t double. Drink some water I am using a broom. Two vowel followed by a single consonant don’t double. Sleep on the bed. A single vowel followed by a single consonant doubles the final consonant: Sit down I am waiting for you. If a verb ends in –e, omit the –e and add –ing: Use a broom I am drinking some water. We double the last consonant of two-syllable verbs when the second syllable is stressed: Begin work I am beginning work. Compare the unstressed final syllable: Visit my parents I am visiting my parents. -ic changes to –ick; -ie changes to –y; Picnic on the river My family is picnicking on the river Lie down. I am lying down.
