suguta valley

The last great frontier - the cradle of mankind & a
land of extraordinary contrasts
Few have visited this part of the Great Rift - it’s
inaccessible, constantly changing & unbearably hot. The
Suguta is located directly south of Lake Turkana, at an
altitude of only 1000 feet above sea level.
They have studied ancient sediments, fossil remains,
and occasional artifacts, and pieced together the history
of a lake that rose and fell multiple times over the past
18,000 years.
Geologists have long been fascinated with this region.

Lake Logipi
Lake Logipi, a saline alkaline lake - often full of
flamingoes - lies at the northern end of the Suguta.
Seasonal in nature, Logipi is about 6km wide by 3 kms
long, and incredible shallow (up to 5 meters). Its shore
is dotted with saline hot springs.
The sand dunes of the Suguta are surprising. The
pure white sands are set within a hostile landscape of
ruggered lava flows and volcanic ranges - the contrast
never ceases to amaze.
Sand dunes of the Suguta Valley
The ever changing nature of the Suguta means that
sometimes the valley is floored by a seasonal stream,
and for a few days of the year the entire desert floods.
This green lake changes colours and has been seen
bright red! Something to do with the algae.
Painted Valley
The ‘Painted’ Valley, as we call it, is another unusual
geological feature. Severely errorded, all shades or red
and brown, and another spectacular sight.
The Silale Crater (bottom photo) has a stunning view
point - the perfect stop for refreshments and photos.
