frown the American Heart Association 44 East 23rd Street. New York. New York 10010 Telephone: 477-9170 Scientists and Laymen Honored by AHA in Dallas The American Heart Association presented awards for scientific and clinical achievement in cardiovascular medicine and for outstanding service during its 47th annual Scientific Sessions in Dallas, Texas. Downloaded from http://circres.ahajournals.org/ by guest on June 16, 2017 Research Achievement Award Richard J. Bing, M.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of Southern California and Director of Intramural Medicine and Experimental Cardiology at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, received the Heart Association's 1974 Research Achievement Award. In receiving the award, AHA's foremost prize for scientific accomplishment, Dr. Bing was cited as "a clinical scientist of imposing stature who has made visionary contributions to heart catheterization, cardiovascular physiology, and myocardial metabolism." He began innovative catheterization studies on children with congenital heart defects at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1943, which included collaboration with Dr. Helen B. Taussig in describing the Taussig-Bing Syndrome. Dr. Bing used the catheter, while it still was viewed as a diagnostic source, to probe fundamental cardiac mechanisms and was a pioneer in his early studies of myocardial blood flow and myocardial oxygen consumption in healthy humans. The German-born scientist came to the United States in 1936. In addition to his University and hospital posts, Dr. Bing is a Research Associate at the California Institute of Technology. Gold Heart Awards The 1974 Gold Heart Awards, AHA's highest honor for volunteer service, were presented to: Albert M. Baer, M. Graham Clark, LL.D., J. Willis Hurst, M.D., and H. Willis Nichols. Mr. Baer, Board Chairman of the Imperial Knife Associated Companies, Inc., New York City, has been active in promoting the Heart Association's International Program. He was a member of AHA's 973 Board of Directors from 1964 to 1972 and also served as secretary of the Association for two years. Dr. Clark, president of the School of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, Missouri, is Board Chairman of the Missouri Heart Association. He served as an AHA board member for seven years and was a vice president of the Association in 1969. Dr. Hurst, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, and an internationally known cardiologist, was president of the Georgia Heart Association from 1963-1964 and a member of the Association's Board of Directors from 1965 through 1973. He was president of the Association in 1971-1972. Dr. Hurst served on a number of national commissions charged with advising the government on programs dealing with heart and blood vessel diseases. Mr. Nichols, former president and Chairman of the Fox Paper Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, is a member of the board, the Executive Committee, and Chairman of the Finance Committee for AHA's Southwestern Ohio Chapter. A past board member of AHA, Mr. Nichols served as treasurer from 1968 through 1973, as vice president from 1964 through 1967, and as a member of the Fund Raising Advisory and Policy Committee and the Budget Committee. James B. Herrick Award Dr. Helen Brooke Taussig, of Baltimore, Professor Emeritus of The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, was presented the Council on Clinical Cardiology's 1974 James B. Herrick Award for her "outstanding achievements in the practice and advancement of cardiology." A world-famous pediatric cardiologist, Dr. Taussig is best known for her work with children born with serious heart defects. In the 1940's, she and the late Dr. Alfred Blalock co-developed the first surgical procedure for the relief of pulmonary stenosis. Dr. Taussig, a graduate of The Johns Hopkins Medical School, became the first woman to attain the rank of full professor at Hopkins. A founder and first president of AHA's Maryland Affiliate, Dr. 974 Taussig was named the first woman president of the Heart Association in 1965. Katz Basic Science Research Prize was awarded to Chin Ok Lee, Ph.D., of the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Dr. Lee, 35, is a member of the University's Section on Cardiology. He was selected as the award recipient on the basis of a paper describing his work in developing and refining a technique that may lead to a greater understanding of how the pumping action of the heart muscle is influenced by such elements as sodium and potassium. His paper is entitled "Activities and Activity Coefficients of Potassium and Sodium Ions in Rabbit Heart Muscle." Born in Korea, Dr. Lee received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Seoul National University. Dr. Lee earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Physiology at Indiana University Medical School, Indianapolis. He is a member of the U.S. Biophysical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Monograph Reviews Advances in Cardiac Hypertrophy and Cardiomyopathy "Cardiac Hypertrophy and Cardiomyopathy" is the latest addition to the American Heart Association's Monograph Series. The new volume, Number 43 in the Monograph Series, (EM 262P) has been reprinted from the July, 1974 issue of Circulation. The 25 papers contained in the monograph review advances in cardiac hypertrophy and cardiomyopathy in the past ten years. The volume discusses some of the fundamental metabolic events during adoptive cardiac growth and factors such as hormones that modify these growth responses. Also considered are changes in performance of the hypertrophied heart muscle and a discussion of the gross and ultra-structural alterations that accompany metabolic and functional change. Copies of the monograph may be ordered from local Heart Associations or the AHA Distribution Department, 44 East 23rd Street, New York, New York 10010.
