
The Stamp Act


Raise money to pay debt of French and Indian War
Law required colonists to buy a stamp for every piece
of paper they use


Colonists were upset, claimed unjust tax because they had no
representation in England to speak for them
Importance: single most important event leading to the
American revolution
D. Townshend Act

The Townshend Acts


New law that placed a tax on certain goods
the colonies imported from Britain like glass,
paper, paint, and tea
Purpose: pay salaries of royal governors and
judges

Importance: led to a boycott of British goods
E. The Boston Massacre

PEACEFUL arrival of troops in Boston
stirred American resistance


Colonials suspicious of standing army
Having been forced, British soldiers fired on
the crowd

11 civilians killed or wounded and word of
“massacre” spread throughout

Propaganda exaggerated the event

The British East India Company controlled all
trade
To make money, the king imposed a Tea Tax
When ships came with tea, colonists
dressed as Native Americans boarded
three ships


Dumped the tea in the harbor
90,000 pounds of tea was dumped as a result
of the rebellion of the tea act.
G. Intolerable Acts

Designed to punish the colonists for the
Boston Tea Party

Closed Boston harbor and placed under British
control
H. First Continental Congress


All colonial leaders except Georgia met in
Philadelphia
Colonies sent a letter to the king saying
they would not follow the Intolerable Acts

Importance: Began training soldiers and
banned trade with England.

Two sides: loyalists (loyal to England) and
Patriots (wanted to be free)
Paul Revere warned the Patriots of the
King’s plan to arrest the traitors
“Shot heard round the world” began the
Revolutionary War with Lexington and
Concord being the first battle
73 British killed 49 colonists
