Maryland Mayors Share an Evening with the Governor, Morning with the General
Assembly
Last week at the annual Maryland Mayor’s Association Winter Conference in Annapolis,
approximately fifty of the state’s finest local leaders met with their representative counterparts at
the state level. Newly elected mayor of Annapolis Mike Pantelides played an exceptional host to
the group, inviting all to share in the best of the state’s capital city.
Thursday night Governor Martin O’Malley welcomed the mayors to his home on State Circle,
where an enjoyable evening was had by all. The Governor reflected on his time as mayor of
Baltimore City, and expressed pride that all Maryland mayors work so well together regardless
of party affiliation or personal policy preference.
Friday morning the group was recognized in the General Assembly chambers of both the House
and Senate. Several legislators waved their local mayors down to the House and Senate floor,
while others sent their “shout-outs” up to the gallery. The mayors also had the opportunity to be
introduced at their respective House delegation meetings, and shared breakfast with Speaker of
the House Michael Busch, Senator Ron Young, and Senator Jim Robey.
MML Municipal Achievement and Lifetime Award Entries Due – March 1
Now is the time to submit entries for MML’s 2014 Achievement Awards and nominations for the
Lifetime Achievement Award.
The 2014 Achievement Awards theme is Community Engagement Gets It Done and will honor
cities and towns that have partnered with their citizenry, businesses and/or civic groups on
programs or projects that improve the quality of life for residents.
The Lifetime Achievement Award will recognize an elected or appointed official who has
demonstrated outstanding service to Maryland municipal government and who has been
actively involved with the Maryland Municipal League. Nominees can be current or former
municipal officials.
Details about these award programs can be found online and in the January 2014 issue of
Municipal Maryland. The deadline for entries/nominations is 12 noon on March 1, 2014.
Free Technical Assistance to Small Community Wastewater and Water Systems
The Maryland Center for Environmental Training (MCET) is providing FREE technical
assistance (TA) to small community wastewater and water systems throughout the State. The
majority of this assistance is accomplished on-site, working directly with superintendents and
operators to optimize plant performance and insure regulatory compliance. In addition, the TA
program provides valuable input to management for planning and cost effective Operation &
Maintenance (O&M) of utility systems.
In recent years much of the TA related to wastewater systems has involved assisting
municipalities as they move to Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR). This TA has included O&M
input during design, development of process control programs during system start-up, staff
training, and intense focus on consistently meeting ENR performance requirements. In addition,
the TA program assists existing small community wastewater and water systems in addressing
all issues associated with maintaining a cost-effective operation and insuring regulatory
compliance.
The TA program is funded by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) for qualified
communities. To request technical assistance please fill in the TA form, found at www.mcet.org

Assistance Sought On Commemoration of 19th Amendment Passage
The Governor’s Commission on the Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Passage of
the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution held its inaugural meeting on Thursday,
January 9, 2014. During the first meeting, the Commission discussed goals including:
developing a plan for commemorating the events that occurred in Maryland connected to
women's suffrage and the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution;
assembling an inventory of sites in Maryland that are significant to the suffrage movement;
developing a strategy to encourage tourism related to the commemoration; and fostering
collaboration between federal, state, county and municipal organizations with regard to
commemorative programming.
The Commission is currently seeking research and volunteer assistance related to all aspects of
its mission. Any organization or individual wishing to contribute to the commemoration of the
passage of the 19th Amendment in Maryland, please contact Commissioner Emily Oland
