Volcano Lesson Plan
The volcano lesson plan provides teachers and students with an opportunity to investigate how
volcanic eruptions occur and how to stay safe during an eruption.

Objectives
Participating in this lesson will help students to:





understand the five major types of volcanoes
understand the relationships between earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
begin to learn about surviving a volcanic eruption
outline Australia’s proximity to countries that have active volcanoes
develop their knowledge of volcanoes from around the world.

Lesson Steps
Individually, in pairs or in small groups, students to read the information on the About Volcanoes
and Be Prepared pages of the Disaster Resilience for Schools website (schools.aemi.edu.au),
paying particular attention to:




the five main types of volcanoes
eruption warning signs
the different types of hazards that a volcanic eruption causes
what to do in the event of an eruption.
Then students should complete the ‘Investigating Volcanoes’ activity sheet. Students could also
complete the ‘Types of Volcanoes’ activity sheet in the For Students section of the site.
