Laying the Proper Communication Foundation
Basic Speech Vocab:
 Rhetoric - The art or study of using language
effectively and persuasively
 Oratory - The art of public speaking;
Eloquence or skill in making speeches to the
public
 An orator is a person who delivers oratory and
uses words effectively.
The Proper Communication Foundation
includes:
 Working towards being a better person
 Communicating Constructively
 Caring about your audience
Working to be a Better Person
 Daniel Webster – A famous orator (public
speaker) from the 19th century, said that if he
could keep only one of his talents/abilities, he
would keep his ability to speak (effectively
communicate). He said, “With the ability to
speak I could regain all that I had lost.”
 Webster would want us to know that those who
communicate should work to make the world a
better place.
Becoming Better People Cont.
 Some famous speakers, such as MLK Jr., have
worked to make this world a better place.
 May we continually be challenged to use our
communication skills to positively affect the
lives of those around us
Self Communication
 Self reflection is often times the best step
towards being effective and ethical
communicators (and a better person)
 Before we say something to someone we
should think internally what the effects of our
words/actions may be on that person. THINK
BEFORE WE SPEAK.
 Inner dialogue is known as INTRApersonal
communication
Self Communication continued
 Intrapersonal communication helps us learn
from the mistakes we make as communicators
 If we don’t learn from our mistakes, then we
will never grow to be better communicators
 On the flip side, be able to compliment
yourself on a job well done
Communicating Constructively
 We must communicate with others in a positive
way that builds other people up and encourages
them to be all they can be
 This is known as Interpersonal communication
Interpersonal Communication
 This is the type of communication that occurs
any time messages are transmitted between two
or more people
 If too large a group, the interpersonal
communication becomes less personal (small
group – public comm. – mass comm.)
 This is not limited to formal speaking
situations
 Interpersonal communication may include:
Conversations with friends in the hall, dinner
table conversations, on the job interactions etc.
 So long as there are clear messages being
conveyed between a smaller amount of people,
effective interpersonal CMU is taking place
Taking Care of an Audience (1 or more people)
 Ask the following questions:
1. Is this material appropriate to share?
2. How would I feel if I were asked that question?
3. Am I giving my audience new information (is
this worth their time and mine?)
4. Is my material too difficult or too easy for my
audience?
5. What can I say to effectively change
someone’s mind?
 AUDIENCE FEEDBACK IS KEY!
Methods for Communicating Effectively with
Others:
 Be Logical – Use factual/sequential evidence
to prove your point; THNK THINGS
THROUGH!
 Show Emotion – It is okay to smile, laugh,
cry, be excited, etc. Humans have emotions, so
use them to your advantage as a communicator
 Be Ethical– Show your audience that you have
a natural honesty about you, a strong sense of
right and wrong, and a non-compromising
approach to important values
