Amphibians
*Spend part of their lives on land and part on water.
*Amphibians are ectotherms.
*Frogs, toads, newts and salamanders are examples of amphibians.
1. Amphibian Adaptations

Hibernation is inactivity during cold weather.
Estivation is inactivity during hot, dry weather.
2. Characteristics of Amphibians
A) When born they have gills which allows them to live under water.
B) Adult amphibians have lungs which allow them to live on land.
C) Can also get oxygen through their skin.
D) Body must stay moist while living on land.
E) Have a long and sticky tongues to help them capture food.
3. Amphibian Metamorphosis
A) Eggs are laid in or near water and hatch into larvae.
B) Adults live mostly on land.
C) Body structures needed for life on land such as legs and lungs
develop over time.
D) Rate of metamorphosis depends on the species, the
water temperature and the amount of food available.
