ARTS LEAGUE NEWSLETTER
Edition 4

Footloose –based on the 1984 hit movie—is this year’s exciting and high-energy US
Spring musical! The story follows Ren McCormick and his Mom, Ethel, as they try to
escape their family break-up by moving from big-city Chicago to the small
Midwestern town, Bomont. Once there they discover the town of Bomont is trying
to escape demons of its own.
A terrible accident years earlier has left the town immobilized, and in the flood of
grief that followed the tragedy, the town’s spiritual leader Rev. Moore convinced the
Page 1
town council to ban dancing. Frustrated by the stifling environment, Ren vows to
change things and begins to gather support for a school dance. He slowly makes
friends, he meets a girl and well… you’ll just have to come see what happens next!
Audiences will love the rock-n-roll score that includes the songs “Somebody’s Eyes”,
“Let’s Hear It For The Boy”, “Almost Paradise” and of course the title song,
“Footloose”!
Our exciting production is directed by professional theatre director Katrina Ploof.
No stranger to Lake Highland, Ms. Ploof has choreographed US musicals and
Thespians since 2006 and currently works on LS and MS projects as well. Our
choreographer is Mr. Gene Bastarache who has been a Walt Disney World Cast
Member for 25 years; he also performs and choreographs throughout central
Florida. Musical directing is provided by the wonderfully gifted Terry Thomas who
is now a full-time LHP faculty member—he will also conduct the show orchestra of
four professional musicians and three student musicians—we couldn’t be luckier!
Senior Stage Manager Jiordanne Galvin leads 25 other seniors in a total cast of 46
actors and six crew. As always, this seasoned troupe of actors and technicians are
completely dedicated to giving their audiences an unforgettable theatrical
experience. As Jules Setta –a cast member as well as a newspaper staff writer—
wrote in the February edition of Twice-Told Tale, “It will be an awesome show filled
with fun music and great dancing and is guaranteed to keep the audience dancing in
their seats!”
Show times are March, 19, 20, and 21 at 7 pm and March 22 at 2 pm in the
HCCA.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and will be available at the HCCA Box
Office one hour prior to each show. Also, tickets may be purchased on the US
Campus during both US lunches from March 16—20. All seating is General
Admission. The theatre will open for seating half an hour before each show.

NEWSWORTHY NOTES
Special Lake Highland Band News
Over the weekend of Jan. 30 - Feb. 1, seven Upper School Symphonic Band members
had the honor of participating in the first Private School Honors Band. The
Private School Honors Band was created in response to Orange County Public
School's Honors Band, in which private schools are not allowed to participate. The
band is comprised of top musicians from private school band programs in the
Greater Orlando area. In addition to LHPS, the schools that participated this year
were: Trinity Prep, Faith Christian Academy, The First Academy and Windermere
Prep. Over the weekend, the band members participated in sectionals with the area
directors, an all-day band rehearsal and a final performance in one of the oldest and
most beautiful buildings in Florida, Knowles Memorial Chapel. Aaron Lefkowitz, the
conductor of the Wind Ensemble at Rollins College, was the guest conductor for the
weekend. Band members also received a master class with area professionals
during the all-day rehearsal. The Private School Honors Band was a huge success
this year and planning for next year has already begun. With the support of Rollins
College, this performance opportunity will continue to grow and eventually; rival
OCPS's All-County band.
Congratulations to LHPS Band Director, Chris Greening, and the selected musicians
for the 2015 Private School Honors Band.
