MEDICINE
FOR
THE
FUTURE
“We believe that committed people, convicted by the power of ideas and given the space to bring
them to life, can engender significant and positive improvements to the quality of healthcare.”
Associate Professor Benjamin Ong Chief Executive, NUHS
As Singapore’s population ages and the country’s healthcare system readies
itself to meet the challenges that come with caring for an increasing number
of elderly people, the National University Health System (NUHS) intends to
play a key, contributing role in shaping medicine for Singapore’s future.
Established in January 2008, the NUHS (which groups the National University Hospital
and the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and
Faculty of Dentistry under a common governance structure) is working towards this
goal through the development and promotion of academic medicine. This seeks to
raise the quality of clinical care through hypothesis-driven research and outcomedriven education – scientists partner their clinician colleagues to develop solutions to
actual problems that doctors have to wrestle with on a regular, daily basis; students
work alongside senior healthcare professionals, developing their skills under close
supervision and mentorship. The end goal is excellence in clinical care, research and
education. Leveraging on a versatile and experienced team of clinicians, researchers
and educators, the NUHS aims to provide the best of clinical care by applying the
knowledge and findings of our research to the benefit of our patients, while delivering
top-notch medical education and training to produce Singapore’s next generation of
doctors, dentists, nurses and allied healthcare professionals.
