Starter
Use the sugar paper on your table to record what you have learned about
the cardiovascular system
After 2 minutes move clockwise around the room and add, build or
challenge other groups’ learning
Checklist:
Components of the CV
system
Structure of the heart
Pathway of the blood
Extension
Prioritise your learning
for today
What do you need to
learn?
2 minutes
Learning
Challenges
➔ Remember the components of the
cardiovascular system
➔ Understand how the heart works as a
double pump to transport blood
around the body
➔ Apply your understanding of the
respiratory and cardiovascular system
to explain how the cardio-respiratory
system supports exercise
Activity 1: Cardiovascular system
a. Work with a partner or teacher to validate your home learning
worksheets
b. Construct a model or draw an annotated diagram to show the blood’s
pathway around the CV system
c. Use an association strategy to help you remember the blood’s pathway
around the CV system
d. Prepare a lesson to teach the blood’s pathway around the CV system to
your peers
Why is the
heart called a
double pump?
15 minutes
Extension
Challenge yourself
and try to complete
more than one
activity to deepen
your understanding
Activity 2: Cardio-respiratory system
Practical activity:
Participate in a short bout of vigorous activity
What do you notice about the changes in your breathing and heart rate?
Why has this happened?
How do the cardiovascular and respiratory systems work together to support exercise?
5 minutes
Key terms
Deoxygenated
blood
Blood containing a low concentration of oxygen
Oxygenated
blood
Blood containing a high concentration of oxygen
Heart rate
The number of times your heart beats in one minute. One heart beat
is one contraction and one relaxation of the heart. Heart rate is
measured in beats per minute (bpm).
Pulse
The rhythmic throbbing that you can feel as your arteries pump
blood around the body. You can measure your heartrate using your
pulse.
Backflow
The flowing backwards of blood. Valves in the veins prevent
backflow.
