INTRODUCTORY
ACTIVITY
LEARNING ACTIVITY
TEACHING POINTS
Tell the children that today they are going to be making healthy sandwiches. Do the children
know how to make sandwiches? Brainstorm their ideas about how to make a sandwich and
what kind of things they like to put in their sandwiches.
Tell the children that they are going to make a healthy sandwich with different foods from the
PhunkyFoods Plate of Health. Reinforce the message that the PhunkyFoods Plate of Health is
a picture which tells us about the variety and amounts of foods needed to keep us fit and
healthy. Can the children identify one food from each of the five food groups that they might
put in their sandwich? Which foods will they need to eat more of in their sandwich? Which
foods will they need to eat less of in their sandwich?
10 minutes
Show the children the range of foods you have available to make sandwiches today. Write a
list on the board, asking the pupils to put each food in its correct food group.
Ask the children to plan their healthy, balanced sandwich. The children should write a recipe Photocopy the ‘My Sandwich’ worksheet,
for their sandwich and make sure that they include foods from all of the food groups, but less one per child.
of some foods (butter, mayonnaise) and more of others (salad vegetables or fruit)!
WHOLE CLASS
ACTIVITY
Split the class into two, half the group will make their sandwiches and half will do an
alternative activity then the groups will swap.
25 minutes
Half the group should make their sandwiches. Discuss with the children what they need to do
to get ready to prepare food, e.g. tie back long hair, wash hands, wear an apron. Ask the
children to name the tools they are using such as chopping board and knife. Teach the pupils
how to use the tools safely. Give each child in the group a job, either slicing, chopping, mixing
or spreading. Give the children guidance on food hygiene as you go along.
20 minutes
INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY
CLOSING ACTIVITY
5 minutes
2
For children who are not making sandwiches they can finish their ‘My Sandwich’ worksheet or
using the photo cards identify which ingredients would be appropriate to put in a sandwich.
Can pupil’s place these in the correct portion of the PhunkyFoods floor Mat?
Pupils can now eat their sandwiches. Did they like their sandwiches? What did they like most
about their sandwich? Was there anything they didn’t like about their sandwich? Could they
have made them healthier?
