Soda Can Packaging Project
Consider a cutaway view of the side of a 12 pack of pop cans inside their box. There is a diagram below. It
seems to me that there is a lot of wasted space inside the box, and that these 12 cans could be arranged in a
much more efficient way in order to cut down on wasted space as well as save money by using less cardboard.
Your group’s job for this project is to explore different methods of packaging these 12 packs that does just that.
First we need some basic measurements to find out just how much space is wasted inside these boxes.

Start and Finish Date: TBD
The official start and finish date of this project is to be determined. You are being introduced to
the work today in order to form groups and begin gathering materials to work with in this
classroom. When decided, due dates will be posted on the webpage. The building portion of
this project is required to be done in groups in this classroom, not at home, and the majority of
the work time on this project will take place with a substitute teacher here in my place.
Your job over the course of this project is to design 3 new boxes for different configurations of
cans with the goal of minimizing the amount of wasted space (volume), minimizing the amount
of cardboard required (surface area), or both. Your group is required to make a working, lifesize prototype of each design along with an analysis form for each one. Your group will make a
presentation of your designs to the class on Friday, April 24.
• The analysis forms will be provided to your group as they are needed. The analysis forms
will ask the following:
• New Box Shape
• Volume of the New Box
• How much more/less space is wasted than the original?
• Surface Area of the New Box
• How much more/less cardboard is needed to make this box compared to the
original?
• List at least 2 pros and 2 cons of adopting your design as the industry standard for
packaging 12 packs of soda.
In creating your new box designs you are encouraged to be creative in your work and to “think
outside the box” (ha-ha). Just as in any other project in my class, creativity and extra effort will
be rewarded.
Flip Video Extension
Once your new boxes are created your group will record a marketing video to convince the
large soda manufacturers why they should switch to your box design rather than the standard
design being used now. In this video, you will make a sales pitch for your best design, and back
up your pitch with mathematical reasons for why they should choose your design. Again, you
should be creative as well as mathematically correct and convincing.
A scoring rubric for this project is attached.
Please use my email: [email protected] for any problems or questions that may arise
during the completion of this work if I am not present at school. All emails will be replied to
