SOLVING EQUATIONS: WORD PROBLEMS – Part 1
You can solve a word problem by using and solving an equation.
STEPS
1. Use a variable to represent the unknown quantity (ie. what you are asked to find).
2. Express any other unknown quantities in terms of this variable.
3. Write an equation.
4. Solve the equation.
5. State the answer in a full sentence.
Examples
1. When a number is tripled, the result is -51. What is the number?
2. Find two consecutive numbers whose sum is 115.
3. Bob is six years older than his sister, and the sum of their ages is 32. How old is Bob? How old is
his sister?
4. Darren and Jeff were cycling together. Darren had to stop due to a flat tire. Jeff cycled 5 km
farther than Darren. Together they cycled a total distance of 17 km. How far did each of them
cycle?
SOLVING EQUATIONS: WORD PROBLEMS – Part 2
Examples
1. A number increased by three and then multiplied by 2 is 18. Find the number.
2. The length of a rectangle is three times the width. The perimeter is 48 cm. Find the length and the
width.
3. Beacon Falls is 14 times as high as Lawrence Falls. The sum of their heights is 840 metres. Find the
height of each falls.
4. In a paragraph, the number of consonants is 6 less than twice the number of vowels. How many
vowels are there if there are 183 letters altogether?
5. The perimeter of a rectangle is 48 metres. The length is 4 metres less than three times the width. Find
the dimensions of the rectangle.
