I understand the land ordinance of 1785 and why the Northwest territory was formed...

French and Indian war...battle between France and England over the Ohio River Valley. Both "Mother Countries" wanted the land for their colonies which sent back raw product to be made into finished good­­­beaver skins become coats etc
French and Indian were allies against the English. The English won but it cost vast amounts of money to win the war...so the King of England wanted paid back! The colonist refused so the King tried to tax them... This caused trouble between King and colonist who eventually went to war against the king. They were mad about Proclamation of 1763 (which forbid them to settle west of the Appalachian mountains due to problem with Indians) and the King's taxes. They sent the King the Declaration of Independence in 1776 which cause the American Revolution

When the colonist won the war against the King, they had to form a new government SO...they wrote the Constitution which gave power to the people and created 3 branches of government.
The Legislative...Makes or passes the laws...Congress is the head and it is made of House of Representatives and Senate
(They can override a veto)
The Executive...enforce the laws...President is the head...has the power of veto
The Judicial...interpret the laws...Supreme Court is the head...declare laws or actions unconstitutional

Problem...our new baby government is broke and has no way to make $
Solution...Sell the land west of the Appalachian Mountains
In order to do that our leaders came up with the Land Ordinance of 1785
1. All the states let go of their claims to the lands west of the Appalachian mountains.
2. Money raised from the sale of land would be used to pay off government debts (loans taken during the American Revolution) and to fund the federal government ( which protects us with the Army and Navy)
How to sell the land... Create Townships...square units of land 6 miles long by 6 miles wide = chunks of land 36 square miles. These square "chunks" would be called Townships

Idea came from Thomas Jefferson
36 square mile chunks that could be broken up into 36 little ­1 mile by 1 mile squares (a 1 mile by 1 mile square = 640 acres)
Square # 1 = 640
price: cost at least 1 dollar per acres = cost at least 640 dollars per square
Is set aside for Public education
