Study Questions
Biology 2010
Feb. 17 & 19
Readings
Required:
Campbell et al. Biology Chapter 29.
Graham, L. E. 1985. The origin of the life cycle of land plants. American
Scientist 73: 178-186.
Qiu, Y.-L., and J. D. Palmer. 1999. Phylogeny of early land plants: insights from
genes and genomes. Trends in Plant Science 4: 26-30.
Study Questions
1. The terrestrial environment was the last major habitat to be colonized by living
organisms. What were the major problems that confronted the evolving land plants, and
how did they cope with them?
2. When did land plants evolve? What is the earliest evidence for land plants?
3. Name the major groups of land plants, and draw their phylogeny based on Figure 1 in
Qui & Palmer (your paper for this week).
4. What are the distinguishing characteristics of the bryophytes? Be able to name and
recognize the three major groups of bryophytes. Are the bryophytes thought to be a
monophyletic group?
5. What is vascular tissue? Why is it important? Understand the basic structure of the
two types of plant vascular tissue. Contrast vascular tissues in various plant groups in
terms of a) cell morphology, b) whether cells are living or dead at maturity, c) presence
of lignin, d) presence or absence of end walls.
