ART MASTERPIECE
Thomas Sully (1783-1872)
“The Torn Hat” – 1820
In Art Masterpiece today, your child learned about portraits, including self-portraits, as they studied the painting, “The Torn Hat”. The artist, Tom Sully, was born in England but lived in America. One of his most famous paintings is of George
Washington crossing the Delaware River. Sully also enjoyed painting miniature, so details were very important to him. As
the students worked on their project, they studied details (holding hand mirrors) in their portraits. We discussed
asking/looking for specific questions to find out details. The class also listened to some pieces of music by the Austrian
composer, Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809), one of the most prolific and prominent composers of the Classical Period. He is
often called the "Father of the Symphony” and "Father of the String Quartet” because of his important contributions to
these forms. CONNECTION: Haydn is as classical in his music as Sully is in his art.
