SAP HANA App Rumble 2013

Problem Statement:
With the increase in count of women affected by breast cancer at an alarming rate, we decided to
devise an application which will warn the doctor and the patient regarding the disease. About 1/3rd
of the patients diagnosed by cancer die due to its late diagnosis. For an early stage diagnosis, surely
there are better chances of survival.
In India, the number of new breast cancer cases is about 115,000 per year and this is expected to
rise to 250,000 new cases per year by 2015. Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in most
cities in India, and 2nd most common in the rural areas.
Empathize:
It’s time people stopped living in the illusion that they can’t be affected with cancer. Cancer is
climbing the Indian graph due to rapid lifestyle changes, adding nearly a million new cases every
year.
“We have one million new cancer cases coming up every year in India.
In India, around 555 000 people died of cancer in 2010, according to estimates published in The
Lancet today.
Cervical, stomach and breast cancers accounted for 41% of cancer deaths in women in rural and
urban areas
India needs to tackle this disaster, and it is only possible with aggressive promotions, screening and
awareness of proper treatment. It will take at least a few decades to achieve the desired results. We
contribute to the cause by developing this app.
Define
A study says that
Cancer blood tests and other laboratory tests may help your doctor make a cancer diagnosis.
If it's suspected that you have cancer, your doctor may prescribe certain cancer blood tests or other
laboratory tests, such as an analysis of your urine or a biopsy of a suspicious area, to help guide the
diagnosis.
Find out what your doctor might be looking for when cancer blood tests are done.
What your doctor is looking for
Samples collected for cancer blood tests or other tests of urine, fluid or tissue are analysed in a lab
for signs of cancer. Blood and urine tests can also give your doctor an idea of how well your organs
are functioning and if they've been affected by cancer.
Examples of blood and urine tests used to diagnose cancer include:








Complete blood count (CBC). This common blood test measures the amount of various types
of blood cells in a sample of your blood. Blood cancers may be detected using this test if too
many or too few of a type of blood cell or abnormal cells are found. A bone marrow biopsy
may help confirm a diagnosis of a blood cancer.
Blood protein testing. A test to examine various proteins in your blood (electrophoresis) can
aid in detecting certain abnormal immune system proteins (immunoglobulin’s) that are
sometimes elevated in people with multiple myeloma. Other tests, such as a bone marrow
biopsy, are used to confirm a suspected diagnosis.
Tumor marker tests. Tumor markers are chemicals made by tumor cells that can be detected
in your blood
Examples of tumor markers include prostate-specific
o antigen (PSA) for prostate cancer,
o cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) for ovarian cancer,
o calcitonin for medullary thyroid cancer,
o alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for liver cancer and
o human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) for germ cell tumors, such as testicular cancer
and ovarian cancer.
CA 15.3: used to find breast and ovarian cancers
TRU-QUANT and CA 27.29: may mean that breast cancer is present
CA125: may signal ovarian cancer, ovarian cancer recurrence, and breast cancer recurrence
CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen): a marker for the presence of colon, lung, and liver cancers.
This marker may be used to determine if the breast cancer has travelled to other areas of
the body.
Ideate : From the diagnosis of CBC and questionnaire doctor may ask patient to carry other
test to confirm Cancer. For Example, Some doctors use marker test results as early indicators of
breast cancer progression (the cancer getting worse) or recurrence. They may use this information
to make decisions about when to change therapies — if current treatment does not appear to be
working — or to start treatment for recurrence.
After the reports arrive from lab the patient has to wait for the doctor to diagnose the report and
cure the illness, by this time a disease like cancer can emerge to next level making it more
complicated.
We can avoid this by tracking the information of blood reports and other reports suggested by
doctor with this app. This app will send an alarming signal to the doctor if there are any signs of
Cancer in the reports. The Doctor can recommend the treatment more quickly rather than waiting
for patients next visit.
For example a patients report is diagnosed with CA-125 which leads to ovarian cancer, this app will
send a signal to the doctor with the reports. With this the doctor can recommend treatments
immediately based on his study of reports. Taking in consideration the seriousness of the disease the
app will send alarming signals only to the doctor so that detailed explanation will be given by him.
Most of the times the patient is unaware of the symptoms of cancer and the changes that occur in
our body. If regular heath check-up is done one might get to know how fit he/she is. WeCare4U app
can achieve this goal. Using SAP HANA technology the blood reports will be verified and will be
checked for cancer symptoms. For this purpose, SAP's HANA is indispensable because, using its
in-memory technology, queries can be processed queries up to 100,000 times faster that
disk-based solutions. A query that would take 2.77 hours using a traditional solution could
be processed by HANA technology in 0.1 seconds, for a real time recommendation.
If the reports are positive the app will send high priority alarm signals to doctor with the reports.
After examining the reports if doctor feels that the patient has chances of suffering from a particular
type of cancer then it will send a Questionnaire to patient. This questionnaire will consist a set of
questions regarding the symptoms a patient might have developed in his/her body. This app will also
help doctor to keep track of patient’s reports and give daily analysis if the test are carried out at
regular basis for observation.
For Example: If the doctor feels the patient might suffer from ovarian cancer he will ask the below
set of question









Do you feel abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling or bloating?
Do you observe Pelvic discomfort or pain?
Do you suffer from persistent indigestion, gas or nausea?
Are there any changes in bowel habits, such as constipation?
Are there any changes in bladder habits, including a frequent need to urinate?
Is there loss of appetite or quickly feeling full?
Is there increased abdominal girth or clothes fitting tighter around your waist?
Do you feel persistent lack of energy?
Do you have low back pain?

These questions will be stored in the database of SAP HANA. The doctor can view
and make changes in the set of questions according to the diagnosis made by him
these questions will be sent to the patient. After the patient’s response of the
questionnaire the doctor will advise the medical treatment.
This app will also provide with information about Cancer, its type, stages, Treatment types
(radiotherapy, Chemotherapy etc).
Keeping data within SAP's infrastructure is essential as it provides greater security than is provided
by the standard solutions for mobile apps. Avoiding unessential middleware would reduce bugs and
potential points for data leaks.
In a country like India, where rural population is unaware of the disease and its diagnosis, this app
can help to detect cancer at early stage. So that people can approach Doctor at the right time for
treatment. If only 15% use this app 17250 women would be alarmed by early stages of breast cancer
with their blood tests done.
Prototype:
Some data would be manually input into the database in laboratories. From there, the data would
be sent to the SAP HANA database, where the data is then analysed for detection. Standardized
range will be set for detection of rise in levels, and then alerts to the doctor will be sent. And then,
the information would be sent to the app on the doctor’s/ patient’s device. The reports of the test
conducted will also be sent on the Doctor’s app and patient’s app.
The app will have other features like
•
•
•
•
•
what diet has to be followed to avoid cancer,
habits that leads to cancer,
Do’s and Don’ts
Exercises.
Some articles related to Cancer and day-to-day news and emerging technologies to cure
cancer.
We strive to take a step forward in this protocol to put an end to cancer related deaths.
We CANNOT PREVENT a cancer, but we CAN definitely DETECT it EARLY!
Test: An idea to detect Cancer at early stage by analysing at faster rate received a great response
from doctors and Cancer Cure Centres. The main problem of detection of Cancer symptoms at early
stage is solved. Patients would be treated on priority if reports are positive.
