Synonyms and antonyms
• A synonym is a word that means exactly
or nearly the same as another word.
• Synonyms are used to develop
vocabulary and strengthen writing.
• Synonyms should be used when proof
reading work to develop literacy skills.

Synonym examples
• Beautiful: Attractive, Pretty, Lovely, Stunning
• Fair: Just, Objective, Impartial, Unbiased
• Funny: Humorous, Comical, Hilarious,
Hysterical
• Happy: Content, Joyful, Mirthful, Upbeat
• Hardworking: Diligent, Determined,
Industrious, Enterprising
• Honest: Honorable, Fair, Sincere,
Trustworthy
• Tabulate – group, order, arrange

Antonyms
• An antonym is a word opposite in
meaning to another word.
Good – bad
Strong – weak
Up – down
• Antonyms can be used in creative
writing to create an oxymoron (two
opposing ideas).
Eg: He broke into a cold sweat.

Synonyms and antonyms
• Create a simple, compound and complex
sentence.
• Swap your sentences with a class mate
and try to improve their vocabulary by
using synonyms.
• Antonym last pupil standing.
• Try and create a sentence that
incorporates an oxymoron.
