Robert A. Salata, MD, Named Chair of Medicine
at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center
CLEVELAND – Following a national search, Robert A. Salata, MD, has been named Chair of
the Department of Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and
Physician-in-Chief for the entire UH system. An internationally renowned expert in infectious
diseases and global health, Dr. Salata has served as Interim Chairman of the Department of
Medicine for the past year.
“Bob emerged as the clear choice during an extensive search for a permanent department
leader,” said Dan Simon, MD, President of UH Cleveland Medical Center. “He will apply his vast
experience and impeccable leadership qualities to enhance alignment of clinical operations,
new program development, research collaboration and educational programs with University
Hospitals strategic priorities.”
Dr. Salata joined UH in 1985 and served as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV
Medicine for nearly 20 years as well as Executive Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine for
seven years. He also is Medical Director of Infection Control and Prevention. He is Professor of
Medicine, International Health, Epidemiology/ Biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University
School of Medicine.
Dr. Salata’s research activities focus on the epidemiology of infectious diseases, clinical trials of
new therapeutic agents for emerging infections and clinical HIV/AIDS research. He is
internationally recognized as a researcher in clinical trials and has received continuous funding
for these activities from the National Institutes of Health.
His clinical interests include the evaluation and management of infections in
immunocompromised patients and infections in health care settings. With 28 years of
collaboration with colleagues at Mulago Hospital and Markerere University in Uganda, Dr. Salata
is a renowned expert in global health and has facilitated activities in Africa beyond infectious
diseases to cardiovascular medicine, oncology, neurology and genetics.
Dr. Salata has been recognized as a consummate clinician and educator with a Department of
Medicine Teacher of the Year award and as a Master Clinician Educator. He is also the
inaugural recipient of the Master Clinician in Infectious Diseases at UH Cleveland Medical
Center.
A graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Dr. Salata furthered his
medical education with an internal medicine residency at UH, followed by a fellowship in the
Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at University of Virginia Medical
Center in Charlottesville.
As Chairman of the Department of Medicine, he oversees the largest department at UH Cleveland
Medical Center. There are over 285 full-time physicians and 10 divisions, including cardiovascular
medicine, hematology/oncology, gastroenterology and liver disease, infectious disease and HIV
Medicine, pulmonary/critical care /sleep medicine, endocrinology, rheumatology, general internal
medicine, geriatrics/palliative care and nephrology.
