Roman Theatre, the best place to go!!
By: Abbius Schinzus
Hello readers! I am here to tell all you travelers coming to Rome all about their theatre! The
Romans take many ideas from other peoples such as Greeks. Latin is the language used in
their shows. They don’t have any theatrical traditions of their own yet because they are not
very inventive or imaginative. When they took ideas, they didn’t use the exact concept.
They would change it up and make it better and their own. When the Romans conquered
the Etruscans many of their rubbed off on the Romans. In the late fourth century B.C. a new
form of entertainment called fabula atellana or atellan farce. This is a comic play that uses
slapstick humor and improbable situations. This idea originated from the Greeks of
Southern Italy. Phylakes are improvised street shows which Greeks performed which
consisted of funny sketches about everyday things. The mime is a person who acts like
there are objects all around them and make it look like they are using them even though it is
all fake and they do not speak. The Romans took both ideas and made them their own for
another source of entertainment. The Romans first performances and plays took at a very
religious festival called Ludi Romani which was a holiday celebrated in honor of the Roman
gods Jupiter, and Roman version of Greek Zeus. Permanent theatres didn’t exist at that
time, actors performed on wooden stages that were set up in about a day. One permanent
theatre’s were made in the first century B.C. ballet came to be, actors began getting paid,
and there were more shows.

At first, did Romans create their own ideas on theatre or stories?
If the answer to the question above is a no, then who did the Romans borrow ideas
from?
