Energy Vocabulary Words
Energy – the ability to cause change in matter. The Law of
Conservation of Energy states the Energy cannot be created or
destroyed only changed.
Gravitation - that force that pulls all objects in the universe toward
one another. The Earth’s gravity pulls the Moon toward the Earth. The
Sun’s gravity pulls all objects in the solar system toward the Sun
.
Kinetic Energy (KE) - Anything moving is kinetic energy. Moving
energy such as Light, Sound, Thermal (heat) is kinetic energy.
Potential Energy – (PE) The energy has because of its position or
condition. Objects not moving, but are in a position to move have
potential energy. Gravity, elastic (stretched rubber bands), chemical
(food, fossil Fuels, batteries)
Friction - a force that opposes or acts against motion when two
surfaces rub ogether. Ice has very little friction that’s why it is slippery.
Magnetism - the force of attraction (pulling) or repulsion (pushing)
between poles of a magnet.
Opposite poles of magnets attract - North Poles attract South Poles
Like poles repel
North Poles repel North Poles
South Poles repel South Poles
Magnetic Field - the magnetic force around a magnet. It’s strongest at
the poles.
