Cancer is the name given to a collection of related diseases. In all
types, some of the body cells begin to divide uncontrollably and
spread into surrounding tissues.
It can start almost anywhere in the human body because the body
has so many cells.
As cells become abnormal, damaged cells survive when they should
die and may form growths called tumors.
_ Cancerous tumors are malignant, meaning they can spread
into, or invade, nearby tissues
-Benign tumors do not spread nearby tissues
-Non-cancerous

What is it?


Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal
skin cells.
It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells
triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin
cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.




It begins in the cells that make up the
epidermis top layer of the skin).
The malignant tumors result in irregular
spots, red bumps, or scaly patches on the
skin.
It most commonly affects areas of the skin
that are exposed to the sun but may develop
anywhere on the body
If left untreated, it can grow deep in the skin
and spread through the rest of the body,
causing serious complications.
What is it?
 Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth or
abnormal cells that begin in one or both lungs,
usually in the cells that line the air passages.
 Smokers have the highest risk of developing lung
cancer.
 2 types
-Primary
-Originates in the lungs
-Secondary
-Originates elsewhere in the body,
metasizes, and reaches the lungs.


With lung cancer, the abnormal or malignant
cells that are formed damage and destroy the
lung tissue.
The tumors may block airways, making it
difficult to breath

What is it?
Uncontrollable growth of cells in the prostate.
The prostate is a gland found only in men.
◦ It is the size of a walnut
 -Can be much larger in older men
◦ It makes some of the fluid that is part of semen.

What is it?
 Breast Cancer refers to a malignant tumor that
develops from cells in the breast.
 Usually begins in the cells of the lobules, (milk
producing glands) or the ducts, (the passages
that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple.
 Over time, cancer cells can invade the underarm
lymph nodes
Small organs that filter foreign substances in the body.

If they enter the lymph nodes, they will have a
pathway into other parts of the body.


What is it?
Cancer that starts in the color or the rectum
Most colorectal cancer starts as a polyp
◦ A growth that starts in the inner lining of the colon
or rectum and grown toward the center, also known
as adenomas
 Over 95% of colon and rectal cancers are
adenocarcinomas.
◦ Only certain types of polyps can become cancerous.


Depends on the type of treatment and may
differ from person to person.
Chemotherapy Effects
◦ Infection, weak/tired, hair loss, loss of appetite and
vomiting.

Radiation Effects
◦ Diarrhea, bloody stools, rectal leakage, urinary
discomfort.
