Dear Parents,
We are off to a great start with our spelling program called ‘Word Work’ (also known as ‘Words Their
Way’). With this spelling program, your child will learn ways to read, write and spell words. This is a
district wide spelling program and proven to be very effective. Instead of studying words to memorize
them, we will be looking at patterns in the words. The activities that we do will help us practice how to
spell words by sorting them into groups that have the same patterns and spelling principles. We will talk
and write about what words mean and how we use what we’re learning to help us spell new words. Your
child will receive a new word sort every two weeks or so and will be tested on their words at the
conclusion of that two week period.
Each night of the week your child is expected to do a different ‘Word Work’ activity to ensure that these
words and the spelling principles they represent have been mastered. These activities have been modeled
and practiced in school, so your child should know how to do them. Since we work hard and practice
‘Word Work’ in school, the activities below are meant to be a quick review for at home. Your child d oes
not need to write their words and can easily do the below activities independently (which is strongly
encouraged☺). This reinforcement at home is greatly appreciated and will help your child become an
even more successful reader, writer and speller.
Monday Week 1 → ‘Spell a Picture’ with your new words. Week 2 → Spell each of your words and then say it in a quality 3rd Grade sentence. Tuesday Week 1 → Put 10 of your hardest words in alphabetical order (A – Z). As you place them in alphabetical order, spell them out loud. Week 2 → Put 10 of your hardest words in reverse alphabetical order (Z – A). As you place them in reverse alphabetical order, spell them out loud. Wednesday Week 1 → Spell each of your spelling words out loud… forward, backward and then forward again. Week 2 → Sort your words under their headings as fast as you can (a.k.a. Speed Sort). When you are done sorting, keep your words in the sort and spell each word as fast as you can. Thursday Week 1 → Sort your words under the headings. As you sort each word, spell them out loud. Week 2 → Study your ‘Buddy Check’ for the spelling test tomorrow. Good luck! ☺ If you would like more spelling ideas and/or written spelling activities to do with your child, please
contact me. Thank you for your help!
Always Learning,
Mrs. Pritzl
