Lone STAAR Rigorous Problem Solving
Notes from Council
• Exponents will be used with Prime Factorization and
Exponents can be used with Order of Operations (NEW this
year). Exponents will also be used with some area/ volume
formulas.
Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts
Lesson 1
• Watch for students who find the value of powers by multiplying the base and the exponent. Suggest to students
that they first write the power as a product of the same factor, and then find the value.
•
Some students may try to multiply the base number and the exponent.
32 ≠ 6
32 = 9

• Insist that the students check their prime factorization by
multiplying the equations.
• 5th grade introduces factor pairs and multiples.
• Prime factorization with exponents is a new concept in 6th
grade.
Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts
Lesson 2
• Watch for students who include composite numbers in the prime factorization. Suggest to students that they keep
a list of the first several prime numbers.
• Some students may try to add the factors instead of multiplying.
o Example: 3 • 3 ≠ 6

Notes from Council
• Order of Operations with exponents will be tested on
STAAR this year.
Misconceptions/Underdeveloped Concepts
Lesson 3
• Watch for students who think that you must perform operations in an expression in the order in which they appear.
You may want to suggest to students that when they first read a problem, they underline or circle the
multiplication and division to remind them when to perform those operations.
• Students will –
o want to work expressions from left to right and not use the rules.
o not recognize that multiplication & division have the same priority, and the same of addition &
subtraction.
o will still struggle with evaluating exponents.
