Our fundraising year draws to
a close on a high note - we’ve
reached our £10m fundraising
target!
We’ve already taken a little time to
celebrate and of course to thank you
all for that support which has made
this wonderful result possible.
Our website features a film that demonstrates how these funds are being
used and many of you will recognise patients and members of staff who
have played a key role in Yorkshire Cancer Centre’s appeal initiative.
www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk
Meanwhile, the need to provide additional support for our patients
remains at the heart of our fundraising endeavours and so the work
continues. Our latest appeal to fund the £160k NanoKnife is making
great progress and our recent September Ball event has boosted that
fund by a further £43,650. Once again, we are grateful for all who have
supported this initiative.

there is a project or event that is just right for you!
We were all greatly saddened by the loss of our dear friend, Dr Kate
Granger MBE, in July. Chris Pointon, Kate’s husband, has written
a heart-felt tribute to his ‘soul-mate’ in this issue. Kate was a true
champion of our cause and her wish to reach her £250k target was
realised shortly before her death on 23rd July. Kate will always have a
special place in our hearts.
We wish you and yours a Happy Festive Season and health and good
fortune in 2017.
Yours sincerely

£Ten Million thanks to all!
A joyful celebration was held in June to
mark Yorkshire Cancer Centre’s £10m appeal
success.
Many of our supporters attended the event, held in The
Atrium, Bexley Wing and they enjoyed sharing their stories
with patients, visitors and staff.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Gerry Harper and the
Lady Mayoress, Lynne Scholes, mingled with fundraisers
and well-wishers; two former Chairmen of Leeds Teaching
Hospitals Charitable Foundation, Hamish Macdonald
and Roger Cannon, returned to raise a glass with current
Chairman, Edward Ziff; Chief Executive of Leeds Teaching
Hospitals NHS Trust, Julian Hartley and Chief Medical
Officer, Dr Yvette Oade also supported the event, along with
Ann Shelton MBE, a long-term Ball committee member
and many other wonderful donors and fundraisers.
A film commissioned for the occasion, which summed up the
work undertaken and the projects funded with the £10m,
was warmly received and can be viewed on our website:
www.yorkshirecancer.org.uk
This unique celebration marked the end of a very successful
era for Yorkshire Cancer Centre; the campaign had been
launched just as we entered a world recession and we
are extremely proud to have achieved our target, despite
some challenging times - thanks to the goodwill of all our
marvellous supporters.
We now look forward to a new era and another new
beginning as we continue, with your loyalty and generosity,
to support our cancer patients and to help make their
cancer centre experience a more positive one.

YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING
In Celebration of My Amazing Wife
– Dr Kate Granger MBE
Hello, my name is Chris Pointon and I am the
husband of the late Dr Kate Granger MBE. I
am sure that most of you will have heard of my
beautiful wife and many of you will have had the
pleasure of meeting her.
Doing a piece of writing about such an inspirational lady has
caused me great stress given that Kate was an accomplished
writer amongst other things but I found strength from within
and felt Kate was with me helping me along the way. I apologise
if the article isn’t up to the usual Granger/Pointon partnership
standard however I am sure you will forgive me.
Kate was a Yorkshire lass through and through (as she often
talked about) and loved this great county of ours. She took
great delight in telling people where she was from and about
the amazing Yorkshire Cancer Centre that we have raised
over £280,000 for with our quarter of a million target being
surpassed just days before Kate peacefully passed away at St
Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds surrounded by family on 23rd July
2016. This date is also of significance as it’s the day on which
6
Kate and I celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary – so both
the happiest day of my life in 2005 and the saddest day of my
life when Kate passed away.
Kate was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer
some 5 years ago whilst we were having a well-deserved holiday
in sunny California where we have family. It’s a place we both
love and have travelled back to several times even since Kate
was diagnosed. Initial prognosis was not good with months
rather than years being spoken about, but Kate defied the odds
and certainly didn’t waste the 5 years. Her journey throughout
has been at the Leeds Cancer Centre who I will be eternally
grateful for (in particular Kate’s consultant and staff) as they
gave Kate options and a quality of life for much longer than
anyone could have expected.
When Kate started her journey with cancer she didn’t know
what pathway she would be taken down or how long she would
be given but she really did show it a thing or two about resilience
and attitude. She certainly didn’t give in to cancer and she
didn’t despise it - she just learned to live with it; cancer became
like our third family member.
www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk
winter 2016
There were times when we had to take more notice of Kate’s
illness as it started to appear again but on many occasions
Kate would just crack on with her fab consultant and have the
chemotherapy and be back either at work or talking to packed
crowds the following day – or flying off to California for a
surprise Thanksgiving holiday!! Cancer made us cry on many
occasions but as Kate always said crying is an unproductive
emotion so I was soon told to ‘man up’!
The input into our lives that cancer had was that it changed the
way we lived, it changed how Kate looked on several occasions
but it could never take that smile off her beautiful face no
matter how hard it tried. She was robbed of her hair at times
but it grew back, she had nephrostomies on occasions but stents
fixed that, she was made weak on occasions but she came back
stronger. So although cancer took Kate’s life, it certainly didn’t
win.
The first couple of years into Kate’s illness we had an amazing
time ticking off several items on the bucket list, with the
highlight being renewing our wedding vows, which meant that
I got to marry my soul mate not just once but twice – a very
moving experience given the circumstances but we had an
amazing day and partied well into the early hours, surrounded
by our amazing family and friends. A day I will never forget.
Other bucket list activities included trips to various destinations
including New York and Barcelona, watching a cricket match at
Lord’s, meeting the Queen, going to a pop concert and meeting
Kylie Minogue, eating at Le Gavroche and meeting our now
friend Michel Roux Jnr, doing a charity skydive, writing two
books about her experiences (theothersidestory.co.uk), getting
a butterfly tattoo, travelling from Venice to London on the
Orient Express, joining a local orchestra to rekindle her love for
playing the flute - I could go on….
Kate always wanted to be remembered as the lady who made a
difference to the NHS and not the lady who died before her time
of cancer. She certainly has made a difference and her legacy
will remain for several generations to come – mainly around the
simple yet much needed campaign entitled #hellomynameis.
Continued over...
7
YCC FOCUS ON FUNDRAISING
The campaign commenced just over 3 years ago following a
hospital admission and the distinct lack of introductions by
certain members of staff which Kate was getting increasingly
frustrated about. One evening Kate and I were talking about
this and Kate may have been moaning a little bit so I just simply
said – stop whinging darling and let’s do something about it.
Kate already had a significant presence on social media at this
point, so we decided to use this to our advantage and we came
up with the catchy hashtag #hellomynameis and had a friend of
ours design a logo using our ideas. Bang! – this is the moment
a global phenomenon was created and what Kate will truly be
remembered for in healthcare circles. Her key values were
around doing the little things really well, seeing patients as
people, involvement and ensuring a connection was made. An
NHS that sees patients as people and not conditions – being
compassionately cared for – treated like it was one of your
family members.
The campaign focusses on something so simple, that takes very
little time to do, costs no money and is the start of a connection
between healthcare provider and patient or relatives. Its success
is in its simplicity and no one can argue against this. Since its
conception it has made over 1.4 billion twitter impressions, it
has gained support from thousands of healthcare workers, it has
been endorsed by David Cameron, Nicola Sturgeon and recently
Theresa May; we have had many famous people support the
8
campaign including Sir Richard Branson, Kylie Minogue and
The Corrs (Kate’s favourite band that we were fortunate enough
to meet earlier this year). It’s now used in many countries
across the world including Australia, Canada and Italy; it’s used
in training at various medical schools across the globe and is
now spilling outside of healthcare into the emergency services,
businesses and schools. I think I can safely say that it is a global
campaign which touches thousands of people every day and Kate
will be so proud looking down on its success and her legacy.
The success of the campaign and the way in which Kate
conducted herself meant that she received plaudits from across
the world and you would often find Kate inspiring others at
small conferences, huge conferences, local meetings, global
meetings or in one-on-one situations with her patients in the job
she loved, looking after the elderly where she worked part time
throughout her 5 years with cancer. We also went on a UK tour
last year covering 1,000 miles in a week and visiting trusts and
hospices up and down the country talking to packed audiences.
Kate has challenged me with doing a global tour next year
given the campaign’s reach, so that will commence in 2017.
The plaudits she deservedly received included an honorary
doctorate, 2 fellowships of royal colleges, an MBE presented to
her by Prince Charles, inspirational awards, Yorkshire woman of
achievement award and the list goes on – our study is crammed
full of awards and certificates.
www.yorkshirecancercentre.org.uk
winter 2016
Kate has also got awards named after her including the Kate
Granger compassionate care awards that are presented each
year at the annual NHS conference and are to celebrate
compassionate care in the health service for individuals, teams
and organisations. This year’s winners were chosen by Kate,
however were presented by myself as Kate had sadly passed
away before the conference. An amazing legacy that will
continue well into the future and really celebrate how great our
NHS is and the people that work within it at all levels.
I am so proud of everything Kate has achieved and the amazing
legacy she has left. The outpouring of messages and media
coverage from across the globe post-Kate’s death truly shows
how amazing Kate is and how she will never be forgotten. She
truly was an amazing individual who we should all thank for
the benefits she has brought to others both in life and in death.
Kate and I were lucky enough to find each other at a relatively
young age and I am hugely grateful that Kate shared 15 years
of her life with me – my soulmate. Kate and I often talked
about the life in your years that count and not the years in your
life – we have certainly packed in a lot into those 15 years!
My amazing wife and best friend, Kate Miriam Granger was
born on 31st October 1981 in Huddersfield and went on to
study medicine in Edinburgh for 6 years prior to returning to
Yorkshire to do the job she always wanted to do – caring for
older people as a doctor. Although my life will never be the
same again, I am blessed to not only have had Kate in my life
but also the amazing family, friends and work colleagues around
me for support.
So – I’ve mentioned in here a lot about how Kate and I lived
our lives and the various philosophies we have. My parting
comment is to remember - remember that when life gives you
a hundred reasons to cry - show life you have a million reasons
to smile.
Thank You
Chris
One thing that many people forget when they talk about how
inspiring Kate is and how a typical week could be along the
lines of being poisoned through chemo, then playing in a band
concert, then travelling to talk at a conference, then working,
then making food with her nephew, then going for a charity
walk. Kate was also terminally ill but her energy, drive and
rugged determination to help others always shone through.

Bexley Wing Arts Programme
We are so fortunate to witness the growth in both our performing and visual arts at Leeds Cancer Centre. The Atrium Gallery
is the perfect space to display the rolling exhibitions that still boast four different exhibitions each year; the excellent acoustics
continue to attract pianists, choirs and other musicians. In short - our Atrium is flourishing!
Our regular pianists, who freely give their time and talent to support patients, have recently surpassed
£30,000 raised from tinkling the ivories:
Wilfred Gilliard
Keith Walker
John Smith
Alan Makinson
Student Thomas Frankland plays during

The Latest Atrium Exhibition Features
the Shutter Hub ‘BRIGHT’
The photography organisation providing opportunities, support and networking for creative
photographers worldwide.
Karen Harvey is the Creative Development Director of Shutter Hub, writes:
“It was always our goal to create an exhibition that could add colour and light to what might not be such a bright day for its
viewers, and we were hopeful that we could have some kind of impact, however small.
“But, already, it’s the stories that have come to light - the photographers who’ve taken part because they themselves have had
treatment at St James’s, or someone in their family has. The stories of sadness, but also of hope. It’s something really special, and
we had no idea of the scale of it.
“At the private view for BRIGHT, we discovered so much. We spoke to photographers and guests, watched people moving through
the space, stopping to hone in on one or two images before moving on. A group of ladies from the charity Beyond Cancer who were
there to present a cheque to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, recognised and knew some of the people in Jonathan Turner’s
wonderful portraits. There was such a feeling of energy, involvement and togetherness. So much happened in such a short space
of time.”
25% from all sales will be donated to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal.
BRIGHT continues until 26th October 2016, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Corporate Support
Tribute to a much loved colleague at CSG: Kate Morfill
Colleague Nick Rushfirth writes: “On 1st August 2016, all the team at CSG Life Sciences completed the Yorkshire 3
Peaks in memory of a dear colleague, Kate Morfill, who sadly passed away earlier in the year. Kate was a real advocate of the
fantastic work done by the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, so it seemed only fitting to carry out the arduous challenge in support of
the charity.
The task – climbing Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough – encompassed over 24 miles of hill-walking (including 5,200ft
of ascent!) in 12 hours; not only a physically strenuous endeavour, but also mentally.
Despite blisters, rolled ankles and old war wounds (literally, in one case) testing our resolve, all the team made it round and
plodded back into Horton feeling broken but incredibly proud of what we had done and the reason we had taken on this
challenge.
During her battle with
bowel cancer Kate
received enormous support
from The Yorkshire Cancer
Centre and the staff at
the St James’s Institute
of Oncology and we are
delighted to be able to
support the work of this
very worthwhile charity
with our donation of
£8,760 in memory of
The Yorkshire Three Peaks Team
Kate.”

Grand Canyon Trek
Two YCC trekkers completed the spectacular Grand Canyon challenge and enjoyed an incredible
adventure whilst raising £5,263.58 between them for the appeal.
Ian Bell, from Golcar, Huddersfield, was supported throughout by the fundraising efforts of his entire family. After being
diagnosed with a lymphoma cancer of the blood in July 2013 and receiving two years of treatment, Ian wanted to give
something back to the cancer centre. His family described the care he was given as “nothing less than outstanding and
we cannot thank the fantastic staff enough for all the help they have given him!” Ian enjoyed the challenge so much he
immediately registered for the India Dalia Lama Trek and will be setting off on a new adventure in November this year.
Rachel Wheeldin, from Colton, Leeds told us: “I had the most incredible experience of my life! My fave bit was the cliff
descent down Mooney falls... so challenging (both mentally and physically) but tons of fun, and the views at the bottom made it
all worthwhile. But to be honest the whole trip was just incredible! Photos will never do it justice. When I climbed out of the
canyon on the last day and took the last few steps over the rim of the canyon I don’t think I’ve ever felt that proud before!!”

London to Paris - A Triumph!
10 resolute cyclists set off from London on 20th July for the 5 day challenge that would take them to
the finish line on the Tour de France route to Paris.
Spending 4 days in the saddle, cycling 299 miles from capital to capital, their route took them through glorious English
countryside as they cycled from Kent to Dover, before crossing the Channel to Dunkirk.
Once across the water (and remembering to keep to the right!) they pedalled on along quiet French country lanes, through
traditional market towns with views of the rolling green hills of northern France, passing the war memorials and cemeteries of
the Somme.
A spectacular finish awaited as they reached the home stretch up the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe, before reaching
the piece de resistance, the Eiffel Tower, which marked their finish line. The sense of achievement felt by all was euphoric and
our heroic team then celebrated their achievements in this magnificent capital. Altogether Team YCC London/Paris have raised
£15,552.00 - a remarkable achievement in itself. Merci YCC équipe et bien fait!
Big Jump: Fundraisers Take to the Sky
3 intrepid YCC supporters;
Susan Carroll, Simon
Field and Keeley Barrick,
conquered their fears to
take on the BIG jump this
year. Taking part in a tandem
jump, they exited the aircraft
at 10,000 feet before freefalling at 120 miles per hour
for 5,000 feet and then
deployed the parachute!
Simon Field
Keeley Barrick
But it wasn’t just the sky-divers that
reached dizzying heights, so did their
fundraising, altogether they raised
£4,282.98 for the appeal!

Hats & Cravats
Our second Hats & Cravats event was indeed a
tasty affair! Supporters queued up for cream teas,
smoothies and a huge variety of tasty, mouthwatering treats.
We polished up our vintage crockery and ensured that visitors
were well catered for with a waiter table service in the best
British tradition! As always, support from patients, visitors and
staff was guaranteed and together they raised £2,481 from
cream tea sales, raffle and various craft stalls.
Our thanks, for the second year in a row, to the hard-working
team from the Lowell Group who gave up their day to serve up
treats to all our supporters. Thanks also to our YCC Volunteers

10th Year for Leeds 10K
As Run for All celebrated 10 years of the Leeds
10K, here at YCC we were busy celebrating
another fantastic year of support from our runners
who turned out in force for the race. Represented
by 57 YCC participants, fundraisers raised a streetstomping £10,009.10 for the appeal.
A 20-strong team from the Oncology Day Unit, headed up by
Staff Nurse, Ian Marshall, took on the challenge to help raise
funds to support patients treated on their Day Ward Clinic. They
rasied £3,777.76 between them. It was a great achievement by
all, and we were even treated to a visit from Big Bird!

A team of ten supporters
completed the 13.1 mile
Great North Run from

on 11th September in support
of YCC. Carly Miller and her friend
Nicola Bean ran in memory of Carly’s
Dad Steven Jordan.Carly told us:
Members of Team NHSE
“The atmosphere was absolutely
incredible. There was so much
support from the crowds. I was very pleased with my time and my
friend Nicola took 7 minutes off her previous half marathon time.
I am delighted with the amount we have raised in memory of my
dad, which is currently at £1,723.23.” Tabby Kerwin, Anna Riley
& Alison Carroll also completed the Great North Run in support
of Jacqui’s million, raising a considerable £1,644. Chris Earle and
his sister Stephanie also completed the run, raising £1,484.60.
Duncan McBurney faced up to two huge running
challenges this year: the Leeds Half Marathon
followed in September by the Berlin Marathon.
“I have chosen to support the Yorkshire Cancer Centre as, like
many others, cancer has affected a family member close to my
heart. I made it to the finish line of the Berlin Marathon in 4
hours and 33 minutes. It is a massive personal achievement for
Fay & Jo Venables
Duncan McBurney
me, and is without fail one of the toughest things that I have ever
had to do. Although I spent many evenings and weekends training for the marathon, I do not think anything can prepare your
body for such distance. It was an amazing experience” Duncan raised £580.92 in sponsorship.
Sisters, Fay & Jo Venables completed another first for YCC by running the Great Bristol Half
Marathon in September. Proud Mum, Sharon, who is a YCC Volunteer said: “The girls had a great time - apparently there
was a wonderful atmosphere and I’m really proud of them!” Fay and Jo raised £282.74 for the appeal.
A team from NHS Employers at Brewery Wharf will set out for the Abbey Dash on 6th November in
support of YCC and in memory of Dr Kate Granger MBE. The team have already started their training and
have raised £246 of their £1,000 target. Their aim is to promote Kate’s #hellomynameis campaign which raises awareness of
compassionate care in the NHS and beyond. You can support the team at: justgiving.com/fundraising/NHSE

RISE to the occasion for YCC Appeal
We were delighted to learn that the Leeds
Sustainability Institute (LSI) at Leeds Beckett
University had chosen to support the Appeal at its
annual ‘RISE Awards’ ceremony in September.
Organised by the Centre for Knowledge Exchange (CKE), the event
brought together talented companies, groups and individuals, who
are shaping the future of the built environment industry through
extensive Research, Innovation, Sustainability and Enterprise.
Not only talented but also extremely generous – “Thrilled to
have raised £575 for tonight’s charity @YCC Appeal,” tweeted
Liz Schofield (CKE) at the end of the evening; “Lovely morning
presenting the cheque & funds & hearing more about this fantastic
charity,” tweeted Donna Lee (CKE) after visiting the Bexley Wing
for a cheque presentation. We’d like to thank the organisers and
attendees of the RISE Awards for their kind donations.

Hoyle Court Primary School supports YCC
“I helped organise the bake sale for Yorkshire Cancer Centre
because my dad has cancer and I realised how much help
others needed” Boris Leusen said when asked why he wanted
to fundraise for YCC.
Hoyle Court Primary School in Baildon, where Boris is a Year 6 pupil, sought
help for his stall from his sister Lucy, Ms ‘Sally Sandwich’ (volunteer cake
baker), Mr Cooper, Year 6 teacher, Sophie Bell, Jack Fletcher and fellow pupils
from Year 6. Boris’s Dad, Frank Leusen told us: “I am very proud of Boris and
all the children for raising £124.81 in just 10 minutes - everything sold like hot
cakes!”
Silcoates School Sixth Form - Exemplary Fundraising
Silcoates School Sixth Form students
raised £2,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Centre
Appeal during 2016. Altogether the Sixth
Form team raised almost £9,000, shared
between Meningitis UK, YCC and an ongoing charity project in Tanzania.
We send our thanks to all the students who worked so
hard to raise funds for these worthy causes & we know
they have deservedly enjoyed great success in their
summer exams.

Yorkshire Three Peaks
Our 5th annual expedition was another fantastic
success with 18 trekkers braving the three
peaks of Yorkshire for this challenging 26mile climb. The unseasonably hot weather did not deter
our trekkers and the whole team completed the challenge
in under twelve hours - a fantastic achievement! Their
fundraising success was also very impressive - the team
raised £7,446.58 - congratulations Team YCC!
Abi Clark and three friends undertook their own
Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge in April and
raised £542.97 for the cancer centre. “We had a
brilliant day, thankfully no rain”, Abi said, “and we were only
too happy to complete the climb for this fantastic cause.”

Helen and Mark
Taylor (left) climbed
the Yorkshire Three
Peaks in July in

Dad, Rob Young,
raising £422. “My
Dad was very well
known in Tadcaster and
was associated with
walking miles!” Helen
said, “Well this time it’s
me doing it for him and
we’re raising money for
Yorkshire Cancer Centre
because they helped my
Dad live longer than was
expected.”
Dalesway Challenge
Husband and wife Anthony and Julie Bradley
decided to walk the challenging 82 mile
Dalesway walk from Ilkley to Bowness for
YCC.In sponsorship the couple raised a truly impressive
£1,362.30, comfortably surpassing their initial target of
£1,000.

“And I will walk 1,000 miles...”
Now that’s a lot of walking! However, patient
Kate Lowe is taking it all in her stride: Kate writes:
“In December 2015 I was diagnosed with a carcinoid tumour
in my left lung. This is a rare tumour which often presents few
symptoms, is difficult to spot and has unknown causes.
The care I received from Leeds Cancer Centre was, and
continues to be, incredible. After having my left lung removed
in February 2016, I was encouraged to walk “as much as
possible.” This resulted in me deciding to undertake the
challenge to walk 1,000 miles in a year.” Kate told her
Kate during one of her walks at St Abs in June
supporters on JustGiving: “Just past 1,100 miles. Hope to get
to 1,500 by 31 December. Still time to donate if you haven’t and would like to!” Kate has already raised £2,097.03, more than
doubling her original target! justgiving.com/fundraising/Kate-Lowe7
Team Biddiscombe Coast to Coast
Steven Biddiscombe, along with six friends, completed a
Coast to Coast walk in July in memory of his cousin and
godson, Robert Sunter. Steven explains: “Several months ago, Robert
became poorly and after many tests and weeks in hospital, it was discovered
that he was suffering from Burkett’s Lymphoma. Despite all this he remained
positive and determined, always with a brave smile on his face and often
sharing the odd joke.” Together with a team of six friends, Steven covered 94
miles on four consecutive days, from Newcastle docks to the Solway Firth, via
Hadrian’s Wall. Well done to Team Biddiscombe for raising £1,322 for the
Appeal!
Howard’s Challenge
Simon’s Yorkshire Le Tour
Long-time supporter Howard Roberts sadly lost
his wife Judith early this year. Howard, who has
completed Thunderburps, Altofts and now Howards’s Challenge
was determined to raise funds in Judith’s memory, as she had
received “fantastic care at the cancer centre.” Along with his
many supporters, Howard set out on his Liverpool to Altofts cycle
challenge in June. He and the team were delighted with the sum
raised - £4,020, bringing his total achieved since 2012 to £10,181!
Simon (R) with his friend and regular YCC Volunteer,
Steven Scupham
Simon Fryer’s “Yorkshire Le Tour” 2 Day Cycle
Ride raised £389 each for Yorkshire Cancer Centre
Appeal and Myeloma UK. Simon took on the
challenge in July, to coincide with the last week of
Tour de France; it also happened to be the hottest
days of 2016 - making his efforts even more
impressive!

Family and friends honour Steven Jordan
We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the family and
friends of Steven Jordan, a former patient of Leeds Cancer
Centre, who sadly passed away in August 2015.
Throughout this year, Steven’s family and friends at the Birstall IDL Club
have organised and participated in all sorts of fundraising activities: Bucket
collection at Batley Bulldogs v Bradford Bulls match; Yorkshire Three Peaks
challenge; Scarborough to Filey walk via Cleveland Way; National Three
Peaks challenge; Great North Run (see page 21); race night at Birstall
IDL Club. Their amazing fundraising efforts culminated in a most enjoyable
evening of musical entertainment at the Club, featuring top local band ‘Cover
2 Cover’, as well as an auction and a raffle. To date, a staggering £13,414.37
has been raised for the YCC Appeal in Steven’s memory. This includes a
generous ‘match funding’ donation from LV Leeds, the employer of some
of the fundraisers. Steven worked for the John Cotton Group in Mirfield,
which has also been fundraising for the YCC Appeal as part of its centenary
celebrations (see page 29).

A Long Courtship
After 29 years together Tracy & Tony
Sawyer tied the knot on 10th August
2016 in Wakefield. Guests were invited to make
donations to CRUK & YCC in lieu of wedding gifts.Tony,
who underwent treatment last year told us that his Dad
always advised him not to rush into things and like any
good son, he clearly took that advice. So after a long
courtship, we wish the newlyweds a long and happy
future together. The happy couple enjoyed a lovely
honeymoon on the Isle of Man and in Scotland! £450
was donated to YCC appeal.
Evening of Burlesque in Yeadon
Beth O’Connor,
Manager of the
White Swan
Hotel, Yeadon,
organised an
evening of
Burlesque at
her hotel in May
to raise funds
for Yorkshire
Cancer
Centre. Beth
and her customers
enjoyed a night
of entertainment
and raised £610
during the evening.
Beth, 27, said: “My
family has personal
experience of the
good work that
the Centre does
as do many of our
customers. We are planning to run other such events in the
future to support this and other worthy causes.”
Sandywood Court Festival
Gloria Pace, her husband Colin, Christine
Hall and Christopher McNally organised
a first ever Music Festival for residents at
Sandywood Court in August. The event was a
huge success and attracted local musicians who gave
their time freely to entertain guests. There was food
and refreshments and a great day was enjoyed by all.
Gloria said: “We’re delighted with the success of the
event and hope to repeat it next year.” £800 was raised.

Chippendale Singers - Encore!
The Chippendale singers paid their fourth visit to
Leeds Cancer Centre’s Atrium in April to perform
their latest repertoire for patients, staff &
visitors. Comments from patients were very positive: Jane,
who is receiving chemotherapy in the Outpatients Department
said: “The choir have a lovely selection of songs - I really
enjoyed the music and it made me forget why I’m here.” The
Chippendale Singers annual charity concert ‘Gloria’, held on 7th
May attracted a capacity audience at St Mary’s Church Burleyin-Wharfedale and once again YCC Appeal was the beneficiary
of £1,000.

Wishful Thinking
Wishful Thinking and Howden Live
produced their 18th annual concert in
support of YCC in June and raised £2,080.
Organiser, Mark Rodger, a former Cookridge patient,
has continued with the Wishful Thinking fundraising
tradition, bringing the total now raised since 1998 to
£40,000!
Sam’s Head Shave
Sam Tebb, from Pudsey, was keen to show support
for Yorkshire Cancer Centre when friends lost their
father to cancer. Sam’s own grandfather had also been a
patient at Leeds Cancer Centre 6 years ago and Sam set about
getting as much sponsorship as he could before the big head
shave. Losing his lovely locks didn’t bother Sam in the least
especially when he realised that the head shave event raised a
brilliant £670 for YCC appeal.
Too Rex made a welcome return to Howden’s Shire Hall
for the 2016 event.
Home-grown goodness! 5-a-day!
After 42 years in the NHS as a clinician and manager,
Tricia Hart retired in January and was looking forward
to spending more time with her family. She started her
nurse training at St James’s in 1974 and Leeds has a special place in
her heart. In February, following a routine mammogram, Tricia found
herself back at St James’s as a patient. “So my cancer journey began,
but thankfully the prognosis is good and my treatment has finished
(hopefully). The staff in Bexley Wing were wonderful.” Every weekend
since June, Tricia has been selling organic fruit and veg from the family
garden, raising an amazing £400. Judging by the wonderful selection of
produce on sale, we think that everything’s coming up healthy organic
veg!

5th Annual Nick Clark Memorial Match
Another ‘cracking’ weekend of fishing was
enjoyed at Benny’s Lake, Lindholme Fisheries
in July as 50 anglers assembled for this wellestablished annual match.
Organiser Steve Akal was delighted with the outcome: “The
weather gods were good to us once again, and another baking
day saw a lot of lobster-coloured anglers queue for the bbq
at the half time interval. After the match we returned to the
clubhouse for the results, presentations, raffle and auctions,
plus a surprise extra of Paul “Rasta” Newman having his
head completely shaved. Paul raised around £250 for this,
and our deep thanks go to him. Massive, massive thanks to
everyone who donated prizes for the tombola, raffle and
auctions, too many to thank individually on here, but you
know who you are. Finally, many thanks to the Grantham’s
for letting us use this excellent fishery once again, and the
2017 match is already booked for Saturday 15th July so get it
in your diaries now!” The 2016 event raised £5,150 bringing
the total over 5 years to a massive £32,000 for YCC. To view
the photo gallery and read more about match results, please

In Memory of Simon Liddle
Simon’s widow, Rebecca writes: “It is with great
sadness I’ve had to set up this page in Simon’s memory. For
those of you who don’t know, Simon was diagnosed with
cancer in June 2015 and was treated at Bexley Wing St
James’s University Hospital in Leeds. He gave it everything
he had, but he lost his battle 12th May 2016.
We have been overwhelmed with the love and support we have
received over the past 11 months and we can’t speak highly
enough of the staff at the hospital and the work they do on a
daily basis.
He requested that he would prefer donations to be made to
the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, where the money raised will go
back into the hospital where he was well looked after.
Thank you in advance
Love Rebecca and Rafe”
£4,345 has now been donated in Simon’s memory via

Simon’s friend John Dougherty wrote: “Just over
a year ago a dear friend received the most devastating news
imaginable. Feeling helpless, my friends & I decided that to
deal with the news we would attempt a challenge & raise
money for Cancer Research, in the hope that one day a cure
could be found. We took on - and conquered - the Yorkshire
Three Peaks challenge, accompanied by Simon himself, in
one of the bravest things I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately since
then the worst has happened & we no longer have Simon
with us to conquer the next challenge. This time we want to
raise as much as we possibly can, to support the Yorkshire
Cancer Centre, who did so much for Simon over the past year.
That’s why this time we’re tackling a coast to coast bike ride.
6 of us will set off on Saturday 30th July from Whitehaven &
135 miles later will arrive in Sunderland, on Sunday 31st. I
expect it to be brutal. There’s hills! We have very little cycling
acumen between us. We’re relying on GPS. It *will* be a
challenge.” Simon’s friends did indeed complete the challenge
and raised £2,591 in Simon’s memory.

No ‘Slumberdown’ as The John
Cotton Group celebrates 100
years in fundraising style!
Yorkshire bedding specialist, John Cotton
Group wanted to celebrate their centenary
year in style.
Yorkshire Cancer Centre, Forget Me Not Children’s
Hospice, Kirkwood Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support,
Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Derian House were
nominated to share in the Group’s 2016 fundraising
achievements.
The Riders: Robert Poynter, Susan Bodell, Tim Nellis, Alan Bodell,
Daniel Hickling, David Page, Edyta Paxton, David McDanielson
Chairman of the Group, John Cotton MBE said: “In a
world where the average lifespan of a company is just 15
years, it’s a huge achievement for us to be celebrating this
milestone. I know very well that we wouldn’t have made
it to 100 years without the hard work and dedication of
each and every one of our suppliers and valued customers.
We also owe a lot to the local community and this year is
about us giving something back to those who have played
such an integral part in our history.”

Ringing that Bell!
Shelley Jones’s 50th year was interrupted by
radiotherapy treatment, but she wouldn’t let
this stop her celebrating! So she waited until
she had rung the end of treatment bell before
hosting a belated birthday party.
A John Cotton football World Cup event was a great
success, followed by a Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge,
cake sales, raffles and tombola’s, a Gala day and Dinner
and, the biggest challenge of all - a gruelling 761-mile
cycle! A group of seven riders from across the John
Cotton Group set off from the factory in Gluszyca,
Poland on 10th September and arrived in Mirfield on 16th,
having cycled an average of 125 miles per day! Tour de
France stage winner, Brian Robinson, was one of many
well-wishers at the finish line to welcome home and
congratulate the team.
There was a huge raffle for YCC and the many friends and
family members who came donated generously to raise a
total of £720 for the appeal. Many happy returns Shelley!
Altogether, £120,000 was raised during the year and
each charity received £20,000 - a remarkable gift. Our
thanks to everyone at John Cotton Group and warmest
congratulations on this fantastically successful centenary
year.

‘Tina’ Cortina makes a pilgrimage in memory of Roy
Twin brothers Richard and
Christopher Barker were determined
to restore their Dad’s Cortina and
complete a driving challenge in his
memory, while raising funds along
the way for Yorkshire Cancer Centre.
In June Richard wrote: “Dad owned his
Cortina from new since 1982. It’s been resting
in his garage since the early 1990’s! Together
with Dad’s great friend Graham Ellis, we have
restored it over the past 18 months - a project
which began shortly after Dad was diagnosed
with kidney cancer. Sadly he never saw the
car completed but his death made us more
determined to complete the work and then set
off on our journey...”
In August Richard continued: “Our planned
2,500 mile round Europe trip in ‘Tina’ to
Cortina D’Ammprezzo in Italy was a labour
of love and is our personal tribute to our
wonderful Dad. It is also in memory for my best friend
Jonathan Parkes who died in 2014 from bowel cancer
and my beautiful sister-in-law Leanne Cain, who passed
away from a Brain Tumour in June 2015, plus a whole
host of other friends and family taken too early by cancer.”
Warmest congratulations to the whole team for a fantastic
achievement. So far the team has raised £4,300 and they
will continue to fundraise until they reach their target of
£10k.

Sweet success for Lisa
Lisa Bourne added a new dimension to the
Horsforth Walk of Art in July by inviting
children to her home to decorate their own
buns - all for a good cause. Lisa said: “I have
supported YCC for several years now after hearing about
the Brightside Ladies and that the cancer charity existed.
Several members of my family have passed away from
cancer, including my uncle in December and just this month
(October) my mother in law. We have seen what great work
the YCC and the staff
at St James’s do. I feel
that we are very lucky
to have this facility on
our doorstep and must
do what we can to help
support it. I saw the
NanoKnife appeal and
felt proud that this new
innovative technology
was available at Leeds
- it represents a new
choice in treatment,
empowering those with
a cancer diagnosis, and
hopefully a prolonging
of life, but it obviously
comes with a large price
tag and so I wanted to
support the appeal.”
