Reduce Stormwater Runoff
9
Protect the Waterfront
Water running off your landscape can carry pollutants such
as soil, debris, fertilizer, gasoline and pesticides that can
adversely impact water quality. Reduction of this runoff will
help prevent nonpoint-source pollution.
Asclepias syriaca
Recycle
Grass clippings, leaves and yard trimmings recycled on-site
provide nutrients to the soil and reduce waste disposal when
reused on the landscape.
PERENNIAL PEANUT
7
Ground Covers
Manage Yard Pests Responsibly
Unwise use of pesticides can harm people, pets, beneficial
organisms and the environment.
Arachis glabrata
6

varieties. Perennial peanut does best in full sun, will grow
four to six inches high and spreads. The buttery yellow
flowers are attractive and this makes an excellent ground
cover for sunny and dry locations. It can be plugged into
existing ground cover or turf or installed as sod.
Attract Wildlife
Plants in your landscape that provide food, water and shelter will attract Florida’s diverse wildlife.
SUNSHINE MIMOSA
5
Mimosa strigillosa
Mulch
Maintaining a 3” layer of mulch will help retain soil moisture,
prevent erosion and suppress weeds.

it a very attractive ground cover.

BEACH SUNFLOWER
Fertilize Appropriately
Less is often best. Overuse of fertilizers can be hazardous to
your landscape and the environment.
Helianthus debilis

Water Efficiency

Efficient watering is the key to a healthy Florida yard and
conservation of limited resources.
ASIATIC JASMINE
2
Trachelospermum asiaticum
Right Plant, Right Place
Plants selected to suit a specific site will require minimal
amounts of water, fertilizers and pesticides.

ground cover that grows six inches tall and will spread up
to ten feet. It can be grown in the sun or the shade and is

situations where turfgrass will not grow.
Waterfront property, whether on a river, stream, pond, bay
or beach, is very fragile and should be carefully protected to
maintain freshwater and marine ecosystems.
