Section 1: Rules and Guidelines
!
I. Introduction
!
Certamen is an academic team sport similar in format to Jeopardy or Quiz Bowl. It is a game of
fast recall of facts about classical civilization and its peoples, languages, and cultures. The state
Certamen Chair may be contacted via [email protected]. For further clarifications, the Certamen
Chair refers players and coaches to the official Certamen rules of the National Junior Classical
League: njcl.org/pages/certamen.
!
!
II. Divisions of Competition
1. There are three division of competition: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced.
!
2. The Novice division is only for those players who are registered as Latin 1/2 or Latin I by the
time of the competition. In the following academic year of competition, students who have
already played in the Novice division before must play in the Intermediate division. This rule
applies regardless of the school level of Latin.
!
3. The Intermediate division is directed primarily for players who are registered as Latin II;
however, any students registered in Latin II, Latin I, and Latin 1/2 may compete on an
Intermediate team, if they wish.
!
4. The Advanced division is directed primarily for players who are registered in levels beyond
Latin II; however, students from any level of Latin may compete in the Advanced division, if
they wish.
!
5. Competition is only open to JCL members. Questions regarding students of Greek may be sent
to the Certamen Chair.
!
!
III. Competition Format
1. A round consists of twenty questions: “question” here defined as a toss-up (for 10 points) and
two boni (for 5 points each). On each of the three levels (Latin I, Latin II, Advanced Latin),
teams will play three rounds of preliminary competition at certamen invitationals. The teams
with the highest composite scores will advance to the final round.
!
!
2. The captains of each team should identify themselves to the moderator as the teams take
their places. Players will be expected to conduct themselves throughout the competition
(orientation, sequestering, playing, and in victory or in loss) with courtesy and respect for
other players and Certamen officials. The same, needless to say, is true of their teachers.
!
A Certamen team consists of one to four players, but a school is encouraged to bring several
alternates. In the orientation session at the beginning of a meet, teachers will be required to
submit the names of team players; from that point on, no alternate players may take the place
of a team member without the explicit permission of the Certamen Chair. Such permission is
granted only in the case of extreme and extenuating circumstances. Players may bring to the
table with them writing instruments and blank paper; such paper must remain blank until the
first toss-up is read.
3. The moderator will begin to read a toss-up question. Any player on any team who believes he/
she knows the answer may signal with the buzzer. The moderator will immediately stop
reading and the spotter will identify the signaling player by team and number. That player
must then answer the question immediately – i.e., within a few seconds, to be determined by
the moderator’s discretion. If the player answers correctly, then the team receives 10 points
and is asked the two boni for 5 points each. If the player’s answer is wrong, then the team is
out for that question and the other teams may try; if a player from any other team has already
signaled, he must answer immediately upon being recognized.
!
Important points to remember about signaling and answering:
a. If any player, even the one who actually signaled, answers a question before the
spotter has called out the correct signaler’s identity, that team is out for that toss-up.
Likewise, if the wrong player answers a toss-up question, whether or not a teammate of
the announced player, that player’s team is out for that toss-up. A player whose Question
was “usurped” in such a fashion by a player from another team will, of course, be given
the chance to answer.
b. Buzzing prematurely because of nerves (i.e., before any word of the question has been
spoken by the moderator) may be forgiven once if it occurs during preliminary rounds:
no such latitude will be given for a player signaling wrong after the first word is out.
c. Repeating a question with the answer at the end (“The author of the Aeneid was
Vergil.”) will be viewed as a delaying tactic. One warning will be given for either such
offense, after which the moderator can rule the team out for a toss-up answered in such a
fashion.
d. A player should be careful to answer the question as asked: a player who buzzes early
is gambling that he/she knows what the information ultimately sought will be. For
example if the question reads, “Two brothers vied for power in the founding of Rome;
which one prevailed?” A player buzzing early and answering “Romulus and Remus” is
wrong.
e. If a player signals early and tries to answer by giving several pieces of information,
his answer will be accepted if all the information given is correct and it is contained in a
short, clear sentence.
f. If a player’s response contains information that the completed question would clearly
Page 3 of 110
show to be extraneous, however, the moderator will give the player one chance to
narrow his response down to only the elements asked for.
!
g. If a player interrupts a multiple choice question, he must be prepared to name the
needed element. “The last one” or “the next one” will not be accepted.
4. If a player signals for a toss-up and answers incorrectly, the moderator may always reread the
question from the beginning for other teams, if no player from another team has buzzed in, but
no question may be read from the beginning to end more than twice. When no correct answer
has been given at that point, the moderator will reveal the correct answer and proceed to the
next question.
!
5. It must be stressed that the answer to a toss-up is the work of one player. A toss-up question
must be answered immediately and with absolutely no consultation or communication
between team members. A correct answer to a toss-up then provides that player’s team with a
chance to answer the two boni, on which they are free to consult. The answers to the boni
should be given by the team captain, but he/she may designate another player to give the
response. Each bonus must be answered within 15 seconds, and the moderator will give one
time warning (e.g, “I must have your answer now”) in each instance. Team members should
exercise caution as they consult on bonus questions. Players should be careful to speak only to
each other and only in very low tones. A remark made in a voice loud enough to be heard
beyond the team table may be construed by the moderator as an answer. If a team does not
know the answer to a bonus, the captain should feel no hesitation or embarrassment in making
a simple statement to that effect. Waiting for the moderator to call time serves only to prolong
a game in an already very tight schedule.
!
6. The first answer is the one which must be counted.
!
7. The moderator will always spell a word when asked, and may at his/her discretion spell a word
thought to be in need of clarification. A player may always ask for a word to be spelled, but
may not do so after having signaled; buzzing in means immediate readiness to answer the
question with no further information. The 15 second time limit on boni is not affected by at
team’s first request for a spelling or clarification, but a team may at a moderator’s discretion
be admonished if such requests appear to be delaying tactic.
!
!
The moderator may, for the sake of clarity, ask a player to spell an answer. In cases of Latin
grammar, vocabulary, and forms, there is no latitude allowed: spelling must be exact. In other
categories, the moderator may at his/her discretion accept an approximate spelling.
8. Any question asked in Latin must be answered in Latin, and correct syntax must be
maintained. Proper names must also be pronounced in Latin when a Latin answer is requested.
!
9. Unless more or difficult information is specifically sought, a vocabulary item in Latin should
be referred to by the first form to be found in a dictionary. The only exception is in the case of
a verb where either the first or second principal part is acceptable. N.B.: If the question asks
for the meaning of a verb (e.g. porto), the correct answer could be “carry”, “to carry”, or “I
Page 4 of 110
!
carry”; however if the question asks specifically for the translation of the verb form, only “I
carry” would be correct.
10. If a mythology question is predicted in one culture or the other (i.e., Greek or Roman), then
the answer must conform. When the toss-up specifies one culture or the other, the boni should
be assumed to follow its lead unless there is a clear statement to the contrary. When no culture
is specified, then either answer is acceptable. However, once the player has narrowed the
question’s scope to one culture or the other, then he/she must be consistent in subsequent
answers.
!
11. No matter how obvious it may be, an answer which includes a specific year or century must
also specify B.C. or A.D.
!
12. If a player or teacher wishes to challenge the accuracy of an answer, then he/she must do so
immediately and respectfully. The moderator will note the grounds for the challenge and refer
the problem to the Certamen Chair for a ruling.
!
13. At the Certamen orientation session, sequestering procedures will be explained. Deviation
from these rules will result in a team’s disqualification.
!
14. Ties will not be broken in the preliminary rounds; however, in the championship round, ties
must be broken. The moderator will use a tie breaker question provided by the Certamen
Chair. If the tie still remains, the process will continue until a tie is broken.
!
!
IV. Competition and Observation Policies
!
1. There shall be no loitering or talking in the corridor or room adjacent to Certamen match
locations.
!
2. At any time, any Adult supervising, administrating, or observing may ask any student or adult
to leave if they are being disruptive or unfairly influencing the competition or do not observe
the rules herein. If so instructed, the individual MUST leave the area immediately. Objecting
or resisting will be possible grounds for disqualification from competition if deemed
necessary by the Certamen Chair.
!
3. Unsportsmanlike or disrespectful conduct toward Moderators, Staff, and other competitors on
one's team or other teams, or in general will not be tolerated and will result in disqualification
of an individual or team if deemed necessary.

Section 2: Distribution of
Questions & Syllabus
!
I. Introduction
!
Based off the official National Junior Classical League standards, this document serves an
explanation of the distribution of questions and the sources for these questions. It is highly
suggested that the competitive Certamen player and team use this syllabus to prepare for
competition. For further clarifications, the Certamen Chair refers players and coaches to the
National Junior Classical League: njcl.org/pages/certamen.
!
!
II. Distribution of Questions
!
Questions in each round are taken from the following four categories in the following
proportions:
!
Novice and Intermediate Levels:
• 50% from category I (Language)
• 25% from category II (Greek and Roman Mythology)
• 25% from category III (Roman History/Life)
Advanced Level:
• 40% from category I (Language)
• 20% from category II (Greek and Roman Mythology)
• 20% from category III (Roman History/Life)
• 20% from category IV (Literature)
!
III. Question Categories
!

passages from various authors. Students should pay particular attention to passages from the
Aeneid, with identification of speaker and interlocutor.
!
!
!
IV. Sources and References
!
1. What is a source?
A source is a book used by the question writers either to generate the ideas and concepts of
the questions or it is a book of such great authority that it is used as a primary source to
check the validity of questions and responses. Unless otherwise noted, it is expected that
players will have either purchased or have access to these sources.
!
2. What is a reference?
In addition to sources, numerous books and materials are used as references. It is NOT
expected that students will purchase all of these materials. As no single source is either
correct one hundred percent of the time or always up-to-date with its information, these
reference materials are essential for judging the validity of questions and players' responses.
In some instances, these are used to bridge the gap between the listed sources and more
modern Classical studies.
!
3. It is the goal of the Certamen Chair to provide as many free and easily accessible sources and
references as possible for players and coaches. Links to online sources are embedded within
the following list. The list of current NJCL Certamen reference books and materials is as
follows:
