Difference between Biochemist and Biologist
Biochemists are the scientists who study about the chemical reactions that are involved in the life processes of living
organisms. They do research on hormone formation and develop synthetic hormones to produce medicines. They also
study about the microorganisms like bacteria and viruses to understand about the chemical basis of life. But the Biologists
study about the origin and development of living organisms. They focus on the study of life processes in living organisms
like respiration, growth and reproduction. They determine the cause of diseases that affect on living organisms and its
aftereffects. Even though both Biochemists and Biologists study about the living organisms, their research area is entirely
different from each other.
Biochemist and opportunities
Biochemists can work in various research laboratories and institutes to carry out their research on chemical reactions. They
can also pursue their career as Professors or Assistant Professors in various universities and colleges. Private firms like
breweries and drug companies offer several career opportunities for the experts in Biochemistry. Petroleum producers and
manufacturers are other employers of Biochemists. As there are wide range of subjects under Biochemistry, Biochemists
can specialize in any of these areas and pursue their career in the concerned stream. Those who are well-experienced in
the concerned area can pursue their career as consultants.
Biologist and opportunities
Biologists are usually employed in research laboratories and institutes as they study about various kinds of organisms. They
can specialize on a peculiar area and pursue their research on a particular type of organisms. Those who carry out their
research on animals are called zoologists and those who focus on the study of plants are known as botanists. Biologists
who study about the inherited characteristics in living organisms are known as Geneticists. Some biologists only focus on
the effects of diseases that affect on organisms and they are called Pathologists.
Key difference between Biochemist and Biologist
Biochemists focus on the study of chemical reactions related to life processes of organisms while Biologists study about the
life processes itself.
Biochemists should have a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry while Biologists need a Bachelor’s degree in Biology.
Research areas of Biochemists and Biologists are completely different from each other. Due to this reason, their
employment opportunities are also entirely different.
