Pronouns Packet II
An object pronoun can be used as the direct object or indirect object of a
verb or as the object of a preposition.
The object pronouns are: me, us, you, him, her, it, and them.
1. To find direct objects ask who or what after the verb.
In the sentence below, them is the direct object of the verb read.
Myths are ancient stories, and people still read them today.
2. To find indirect objects ask to whom or for whom after the verb.
In the sentence below, her is the indirect object of the verb showed.
Jake showed her the beautifully illustrated book of myths.
3. To find objects of a preposition ask who or what after the
preposition.
In the sentence below, us is the object of the preposition to.
My mother explained the meaning of the story to us.
Write whether each underlined pronoun is a direct object or an indirect
object.

Underline the prepositions used in the sentences below.

A possessive pronoun shows possession or ownership. It takes the place of
a possessive noun. Unlike possessive nouns, possessive pronouns do not
contain apostrophes.
This skateboard is Lucy's. (possessive noun)
This skateboard is hers. (possessive pronoun)
Underline each possessive pronoun and circle each possessive adjective.

Writing Practice: Using possessive pronouns, write a brief account of a nightmare
vacation you might envision taking with your family or your friends. Use at least
six different possessive pronouns in your story, and don’t forget details like these:
ice cream cones melting all over your luggage, traveling 1,000 miles from home and
meeting your math teacher in a public restroom, getting to “Reptile Acres” and
finding it closed, arriving at “Waterland” with no swimsuit, sitting next to the
family dog who suddenly gets carsick, etc.

Pronouns can be joined with some verbs to form contractions. An apostrophe
replaces the missing letter or letters in a contraction. In the second
sentence, They're is a contraction for They are.
Earthquakes occur around the world.
They're often terrifying events.
Why do you think contractions are often confused with possessive
adjectives?
Ex. - it's and its
