My thanks to you for your continued support of the artists who make and present shows here, and indeed your support of the building, which as you know, celebrates its 120th birthday this year. This season continues our pledge to honour the rich and varied performance history of the building through a programme that brings you the very best of the performing arts. Raincoat which opens on Halloween night and runs right through the mid-term break. Early birds can grab the best seats in the house by booking a family ticket to this year’s panto, Beauty and the Beast. Shows to look out for in the coming months are the unmissable Irish premiere of Futureproof by remarkable Cork playwright, Lynda Radley, which is our Cork Midsummer Festival offering this June, and our new production of Brian Friel’s beautiful and classic play Dancing at Lughnasa. Both productions feature large ensembles of some of Ireland’s most accomplished actors, and I can’t tell you how excited I am by the work of each of the creative teams. It’s taken three years for us to be able to bring you a summer programme of this calibre - the anticipation is almost too much! In theatre, leading UK theatre company Paines Plough bring their smash-hit Edinburgh show, Every Brilliant Thing, to us in July. It took me three years to get to see this show at Edinburgh (tickets were in such demand) and it met every expectation I had - a tall order! We also have some of the big hits from last year’s Dublin Fringe Festival: Joanne McNally’s honest and funny Bite Me; Brokentalkers’ stunning take on Europe’s refugee crisis, This Beach; the charming and hilarious To Hell In A Handbag and last, but by no means least, is a show I’ve been trying to programme for (literally) years: Moonfish Theatre’s gorgeous and unique adaptation of Joseph O’Connor’s bestselling novel, Star of the Sea. It is everything that modern Irish theatre can, and should, be doing. I know I say it all the time, but really – don’t miss this! You know well by now that great nights out are our favourite! The autumn sees a range of great nights out in the shape of live gigs, comedy and even movies: The Illegals, featuring Niamh Kavanagh; She Moved Through The Fair, (featuring songs made famous by Cork singer Margaret Barry); two editions of The Everyman Sunday Songbook; John Spillane; David O’Doherty; as well as a host of riches yet to be announced from Cork Comedy Festival (September); Cork Jazz Festival (October) and Cork Film Festival (November). From great nights out to the great outdoors, we’re thrilled to announce the return of Tom Crean: Antarctic Explorer, as well as appearances from legendary mountaineer Simon Yates (of Touching the Void fame) and Ireland’s answer to David Attenborough: wildlife expert Colin Stafford-Johnson. Families who fancy a bit of the weird and wonderful should check out the acclaimed production of Alice In Wonderland by Blue As ever, we’re bringing you the best of national and international touring in theatre, opera and dance. Keep an eye out for the Opera Collective Ireland production of Benjamin Britten’s Owen Wingrave, and the return of Ballet Ireland with a pre-Christmas treat, Romeo & Juliet. Julie Kelleher Golden Memories Michael Twomey looks back on some wonderful times in the Everyman T he Everyman Theatre Company was founded in Cork in 1963 - over half a century ago, which makes it a remarkable stayer in today’s swiftly-changing world. It is only fitting that it should have its home in a building which has an even longer history, dating back to late Victorian times. The Everyman Palace first opened in 1897 as Dan Lowrey’s Music Hall. That makes this year of 2017 its 120th birthday. Many happy returns, ma’am, says Everyman board member and 2016-17 president, Michael Twomey, who, with 73 years on the stage himself, has amassed some cherished memories of this little jewel box of a theatre. ‘It’s always been part of Cork, part of the old city, part of my childhood. I always wanted to appear on that stage, and I’ve never forgotten the first time I did. There was such a magical atmosphere to the place, all that backstage area where so many performers had played their parts, the auditorium, and the ‘gods’ where generations of Corkonians cheered or booed, clapped and laughed. I felt I was taking my place in a tradition, and I suppose I was really.’ That first appearance was in White Horse Inn, directed by James N. Healy, recalls Michael fondly. ‘I played the hero’s father. And did he wear the traditional Tyrolean lederhosen, which display the male leg to such advantage? ‘I certainly did. I’ll have you know that Lennox Robinson once commended my shapely legs in tights when I played Hamlet. With such encouragement, I had no worries at all about donning the shorts for White Horse Inn!’ Another production he remembers very fondly was The Golden Years, the story of Percy French, again directed by James N. Healy. ‘It was such fun to do, and audiences loved it, especially the scenes with the West Clare Railway. I was the guard to James N’s driver, and played about another half dozen parts as well.’ The wonderful thing about the Everyman, says Michael, is its rich intimacy, which draws the audience into collusion with the performers, and makes them truly part of the action. ‘You don’t get that in huge theatres. Here, you can really reach out and touch the people sitting there, and that makes such a difference.’ He cites as examples plays like Declan Hassett’s Sisters, for which he directed the late Gerry McLoughlin, and two favourites in which he acted himself, The Sunshine Boys, and The Outgoing Tide. ‘David Coon and I had such fun in The Sunshine Boys, and it was perfect for a former music hall like the Palace.’ The Outgoing Tide, which he jokingly calls his ‘swansong,’ dealt with the difficult theme of Alzheimer’s, and in that intimate auditorium worked ideally. As you look around the theatre, completely renovated and restored to its original Victorian grandeur, the eye is drawn instinctively to the splendid stage boxes with their rich paintwork and gold scrolling. Mr Twomey has an interesting piece of information about those. ‘Did you know that when the theatre became a fulltime cinema, those boxes were literally pushed back, to give a In rehearsal John B. Keane's The Man From Clare clearer view of the screen. It with l. to r. Murt Kelleher, Michael Twomey, Sean Healy, took Everyman’s dedicated Charlie Ginnane and Ber Power. renovation work to bring them back out again where they were always meant to be.’ Tradition and exploration have always been twin watchwords for this theatre. The years have seen an incredible range of shows here, drama and comedy mingling with opera and dance, concerts and pantomimes. Michael is proud of having produced the first three pantomimes here from 1991 to 1993, after which CADA took up the baton. Another favourite of his has been the Sunday Songbook series which have built up an ardent following with performances regularly sold out long in advance. ‘Those, if you like, really hark back to the old days when the Palace was a lively music hall and everyone sang along to the well-known numbers. I loved working with Linda Kenny and Damian Smith on every one of the shows, each with its different theme.’ Perhaps Michael Twomey’s fondest memory is reserved for the late great Paddy Comerford, a comedy legend in Cork. ‘I was directing him for his one-man show, Just Paddy, which became a DVD afterwards. You would think with all his experience he would be relaxed and calm, but he was the biggest worrier on earth! He was scared that he might forget the sequence of stories onstage, so I arranged big prompt cards all along the inside rail of the orchestra pit where he could see them easily. Then, just before the curtain went up, didn’t this man sit down in the front row and throw his coat over the rail! Paddy nearly did his nut, and I had to send an usher down at a run to ask him to remove it for health and safety reasons!’ Michael Twomey in conversation with Jo Kerrigan.
