WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF TECTONIC HAZARDS?
1 Structure of the Earth
 Find/draw a labelled cross section through the earth showing the different layers (asthenosphere, etc)
 Find/draw a diagram and write a paragraph to show how convection currents work.
2 Theory of plate tectonics
 Write about Alfred Wegener’s idea of continental drift
 What evidence is there that continental drift takes place?
 Describe what is meant by ‘plate tectonic theory’
3 Types of plate boundary
Find/draw 5 annotated cross-sectional diagrams and write notes to show the processes and landforms that
occur at the 3 types of plate boundaries:
 Convergent (destructive – oceanic and continental plates)
 Convergent (destructive – oceanic and oceanic plates)
 Convergent (collision zone – two continental plates)
 Divergent
 Transform
4 Map of plates and plate margins
 Find/draw a map of plates and plate boundaries. Use a key to distinguish between the different plate
boundaries
 Label/find a map to show the global distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes
 Write at least half a page summarising the main patterns your map shows
5 Glossary of terms
Start to create a glossary of key terms:
- Ash falls
- Asthenosphere
- Benioff zone
- Elastic rebound
- Epicentre
- Focus (also explain the difference between shallow and deep focus earthquakes)
- Gas eruptions
- Ground shaking
- Hotspots
- Intra-plate earthquake
- Jokulhlaup
- Lahars
- Landslides
- Lava flows
- Liquefaction
- Magnitude
- Paleomagnetism
- Pyroclastic flows
- Richter scale
- Sea floor spreading
- Slab pull
- Subduction zone
- Tectonic plate
- Waves: P, S and L
