Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is the name of one of the four countries which constitute the United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is located in the north-east part of Ireland,
and it occupies about a sixth of the island’s area. The remaining part of the Island is occupied
by Northern Ireland’s only neighbour, the Republic of Ireland, which is an independent
country.
The total area of Northern Ireland is 13,843 sq km. Northern Ireland is the smallest division
of the United Kingdom – its population is only about 1.7 milion. The capital and the largest
area of Northern Ireland is Belfast with the population of about 275,000. There are only four
more settlements with city status: Armagh, Derry, Lisburn and Newry. Northern Ireland is
divided into six counties: County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Femanagh,
County Londonderry and County Tyrone.
Northern Ireland is a land of low mountains and rolling plains which cover the central part of
the country. In the north-east of the island there is the Antrium Plateau with its unique
landscape. The volcanic activity which created the Antrim Plateau also formed the eerily
geometric pillars of the Giant’s Causeway in north on the north Antrim coast. Also Antrim
are the Carric-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Mussenden Temple and the Glens of Antrim.
The highest peak is Slieve Donard which is 852 meters high. The largest lake is Lough Neagh.
It covers about 388 sq km and is the largest lake in the United Kingdom. The longest river in
Northern Ireland is the River Bann. It actually consists of two rivers: the Upper Bann, which is
76 km long and flows into the southern end of Lough Neagh and flows into the Atlantic
Ocean. The Lower Bann is 61 km long. Northern Ireland is separated from Scotland by the
North Channel and by the Irish Sea from England. Northern Ireland has a temperate
maritime climate with unpredictable weather at all times of the year.
