CALL TO ARMS!
CELEBRATE 150 YEARS!
With the firing on Fort
Sumter in 1862, tensions that
have been simmering for
years have finally erupted!
For the South, it is a desire
not to be told what to do, a
need to gain financial
independence
from
the
North, and particularly the
right to maintain slavery.
For the North, it is the
determination to abolish
slavery, but particularly to
maintain the Union of all the
States in America – at all
costs…
And so erupted a war that
was to last for four years,
resulting in the loss of nearly
one million lives, and where
simmering resentments as a
result of this war are still
evident in parts of the United
States today.
Prior to the war, President
Lincoln raised 75,000 troops,
thinking the first battle would
see the war over and done
with.
The South‘s reaction was to
fight fanatically, because they
saw the North as invading
their country.
No-one could anticipate
that the war would continue
for another four years, and
change America forever.
In fact, the war escalated to
such a degree that over 10,000
separate conflicts took place
throughout North America.
YOU CAN EXPERIENCE
THIS FOR YOURSELF!
COME AND SEE WHERE
IT ALL HAPPENED!
For example, did you
know…
During the Battle of
Antietam, 12,401 Union men
were killed, missing or
wounded;
double
the
casualties of D-Day, 82 years
later. With a total of 23,000
casualties on both sides, it was
the bloodiest single day of the
Civil War.
The Civil War was the first
railway war, where both sides
used an extensive complex of
lines to carry troops and
supplies.
Half of the war casualties
were from disease of one sort
or another.
Surgeons did not wash
their hands after dealing with
casualties, as they thought all
blood was the same.
As Lee said, at Fredericksburg, where
the North was routed, "It is well that
war is so terrible lest we should grow
too fond of it.”

THE CIVIL WAR
Meridian World Travel is known for its depth of
knowledge and experience, and its thirst for
educating. In the most in-depth tour of its kind, we
host you through the conflict between the Union
Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of
Northern Virginia. We commence our historic journey
in Washington, and follow the Civil War, on a
chronological and historically accurate path, from
the First Battle of Bull Run in Manassas until the War’s
end with the signing of the Treaty at the Appomattox
Court House. With many personal tales of conflict,
we live the lives of the brave soldiers and their
families, and learn not only of their hardships, but also
their triumphs during the most significant war in
America’s history.
Our tour dates also take
advantage of the Cherry Blossom Season in
April/May, and the breathtaking colours of the
September Fall – two of the best seasons in the year
to visit this magnificent part of the United States.
“So great is my confidence
in General Lee that I am
willing to follow him
blindfolded”
General Thomas
"Stonewall" Jackson
“I am passionately interested in
understanding how my country
works. And if you want to know
about this thing called the United
States of America you have to know
about the Civil War.”
Ken Burns
"Although a soldier by
profession, I have never felt any
sort of fondness for war, and I
have never advocated it, except
as a means of peace.“
“We must expect reverses,
even defeats. They are sent
to teach us wisdom and
prudence, to call forth
greater energies, and to
prevent our falling into
greater disasters.”
“I know only two tunes.
One of them is “Yankee Doodle”,
the other isn’t.”
Robert E. Lee
Ulysses S. Grant

In two days at
Shiloh on the
banks of the
Tennessee
River, more
Americans fell
than in all
previous
American
wars
combined.
Share the secrets of
brothers in arms, who
fought so bravely against
each other…..
In March 1862, European
powers watched in
worried fascination as the
Monitor and Merrimack
battled off Hampton
Roads, Va. From then on,
after these ironclads
opened fire, every other
navy on earth was
obsolete.
Clara Barton was an American nurse, civil rights activist and
humanitarian, who is best remembered for organising the
American Red Cross. While tending the wounded at the Battle
of Antietam, Clara worked so close to the battlefield that a
bullet once tore through her sleeve and killed a man she was
treating.
