2016 CONFERENCE THEME: Creating, Building, and Designing with Sociology We come together once a year as applied, clinical, practicing, and public sociologists. In practice, we see our responsibility as having our work matter – having sociological ideas get used in the world to effect positive social change, or to help systems function as well as possible in their current forms. So how do we start making a difference? How about submitting a creative session to this year’s annual conference? You can share your research, policy work, teaching, activism, clinical experience, or other applications that are helping sociology to make a difference in the world. We welcome submissions of completed papers, works in progress, workshops, and panel discussions—all the standard conference fare. But we especially encourage you to think creatively, imagining yourself and your audience as participants in: clinical practice a policy-oriented think tank a board of directors meeting business or client relationships negotiation of a research or evaluation study an advisory role for a foundation, government agency, or non-profit crafting a practice-oriented sociology department data-based organizational decision-making institutional research Research findings are important, but your audience at the conference is more interested in how you came to do the research, what problems you had to overcome, what creative ways you turned problems into strengths, and how you were able to communicate complex findings to a general audience. With these creative goals in mind, we encourage interactive and informal formats rather than formal paper presentations. The form below is for submitting an individual “paper” presentation. Full sessions will run 1½ hours. Individual paper presentations will last 15-20 minutes. We hope you’ll consider sharing your knowledge about and interest in the practice of sociology with us in October! Submit your proposal to AACS Vice President Jim Wiest, at [email protected] Some possible session themes are provided below, but feel free to think creatively.
