GEORGE W. BUSH IN OFFICE: 20012001 - Bush defeats Democrat Al Gore even though Gore gets the popular vote
2001 - Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda commit the largest and deadliest attack on the U.S.
in history. Over 2000 Americans and foreigners are killed as civilian airplanes are
used as missiles. Both of the World Trade Center buildings are destroyed along with
heavy destruction to the Pentagon. Bush orders Operation Enduring Freedom to
destroy the Talaban rule in Afghanistan who was supporting Bin Laden and the
terrorists.
2003 - Operation Iraqi Freedom - the U.S., the British and others attack Iraq to remove
Saddam Hussein from power. In Dec. 2003 he was captured. Before and after his capture,
many insurgent
groups try to destroy the interim govt. The first elections in Iraqi history are scheduled for
January 2005.
2003 - North Korea tries to blackmail U.S. and other nations with its on and off nuclear
weapons program.
