Pre-slides: Focus slide; “And now, it’s time for Art Lit”
Slide 1: Words We Will Use Today
Symbol: Something that stands for something else, especially a letter, figure, or sign that represents a
real object or idea.
Hieroglyphs: Ancient Egyptians wrote by using picture words they called hieroglyphics. Hieroglyph
symbols that could represent letters, whole words, sounds or names.
Relief: A relief is a sculpture that is carved into part of a wall or structure. Reliefs were generally
painted.
Slide 2 – Ancient Egypt
Today we’re going back in time five thousand years to learn about the art of the Ancient Egyptians!
Egyptian civilization developed along the lush, fertile banks of the Nile, the world’s longest river.
The paintings and statues of Ancient Egypt survived for many thousands of years because of the
extremely dry climate of the area and because they were sealed off in stone tombs away from the air. We
know what Ancient Egyptians looked like, what kind of clothes they wore, what jobs they worked, and
what they considered important because we have their art to study.
Slide 3 – Nefertiti
During the whole 3,000 years that the civilization we call Ancient Egypt ruled in the land of the Nile,
their art didn’t change very much. Much of their art is stylized, which means it doesn’t really look like
real life but has a huge amount of symbolism in what was shown. They also created amazingly realistic
sculptures. Here is a painting and a sculpted bust of the same woman - Queen Nefertiti. What
differences do you see? (examples - stylized vs realistic. Painting vs sculpture)
Slide 4 – Sphinx and Ramses II
The Ancient Egyptians created many famous gigantic sculptures and temples that still survive. Some
examples include the Pyramids, the Great Sphinx of Giza, and the statues of Ramses II at the Abu
Simbel temples.
How tall do you think these people are? Over 60 feet tall, which is like a 6 story building!
Slide 5 – King Tut Funerary Mask
Although they are famous for their giant statues, the Egyptians also carved smaller, more ornate
sculptures and jewelry. They used many materials including alabaster, ivory, limestone, basalt, wood
gilded with gold, and sometimes even solid gold. This is the funerary mask of a famous pharaoh named
Tutankhamen – you might know him as King Tut. The collar is made with semiprecious stones and the
stripes on the headdress are made with blue glass. The rest of the mask is made from twenty-four pounds
of solid gold!

Slide 6 – Painted Hieroglyphics
A lot of Ancient Egyptian art includes Hieroglyphics, which was their way of writing using picture
words to tell a story. One of the goals in writing hieroglyphics was that the writing would look like art
and be beautiful to look at. This tomb art includes a painting of many hundreds of hieroglyphs that tell
the story of the central figure in the image.
Hieroglyphics was a very complicated way of writing. How many letters are in our alphabet? (26) Can
you believe that with hieroglyphics, thousands of individual symbols could represent either a sound, a
word or an entire phrase. For example, a hieroglyph of an eye could mean the word "eye,” the letter "I,"
or the phrase “to make or do.”
Slide 7 – Carved Hieroglyphics
In addition to being painted, hieroglyphics were also carved into walls, statues and sculptures. When
they are carved in this way, hieroglyphics are called a relief. Reliefs were usually painted and could be
extremely colorful. They mostly used the colors blue, black, red, green, and gold in their paintings.
Slide 8 – Our Project
Today we will make our own hieroglyphic relief carving! Ready? (play video)
