1. Explain the significance of:
● George McClellan­ commander of the Union army in the east early in the Civil War.
● Ulysses S. Grant­ Union general who won battles in the west. He was eventually
promoted to command the Army of the Potomac.
● Battle of Shiloh­ bloody battle in Tennessee won by Grant.
● William Tecumseh Sherman­ Union general at battle of Shiloh. Later he
commanded an army that swept through the South (“Sherman’s March to the Sea”).
● David Farragut­ Union naval commander who captured New Orleans.
● Seven Days’ Battles­ Confederate victory in Virginia, during which Lee stopped
Union campaign against Richmond.
● Battle of Antietam­ battle in Maryland that ended Lee’s first invasion of the North.
3. Why were Union victories in the West and the fall of New Orleans significant to the Union
cause?
These victories meant that the Union was closer to its goal of splitting the South in two.
It also represented a bright spot for the Union­­ which had been losing most of the battles
in the east.
4. Why did Lee go on the offense against the North?
1. He hoped a Southern victory in the North would force Lincoln into peace talks.
2. A successful invasion might show foreign nations that the Confederacy could win the
war, & convince them to side with the South.
5. How did the South’s fortune change after Lee took command of the army of Northern
Virginia?
Lee was an outstanding general and he led the main Confederate army to numerous
victories.
6. What does Lee’s invasion of the North suggest about his qualities as a general and a
leader?
Daring
Made independent decisions.
7. Why was Southern cotton not reaching the factories of Europe?
The Union blockade of the Southern coast and the capture of New Orleans by the Union.
8. Why did Lincoln fire McClellan?
He was frustrated by McClellan’s cautious approach.
