ARTIST STATEMENT
My artistic practice is about memorizing the number π to ten thousand digits.
Although I have already accomplished that, I still make mistakes and need
regular upkeep. Thus one approach I take aims to make the regular practice
of π more effective and meaningful. To that end I create software or simple
electronic devices that allow me to check myself using different kinds of input
and feedback.
Another approach involves representing the numbers as I recall them.
Numbers are abstract objects, and I believe they are capable of telling us about
our thought with great nuance. To accomplish this communication, I transpose
the digits of π onto formal objects through giving them physicality or sound.
Often this process occurs in concert with software and electronic devices.
A third approach focuses on memorizing new information. I use various
methods inspired by traditional memorization techniques, neuroscience, and
my own ad hoc ideas. Many of these are visual and associative in nature,
meaning that they are given form in my work through processes like painting,
sculpture, and writing.
While these disparate approaches share π as a constant element, they are also
connected by the assumption that knowledge is important, and by definition
profound. My artistic practice seeks to understand knowledge by testing and
revising my assumptions about it.
