PART I
African Symphony - Van Allen Clinton McCoy (1940-79)
Mc Coy was an accomplished musician, music producer, arranger, songwriter, and orchestra conductor, known best for his 1975
internationally successful song "The Hustle". He has approximately 700 song copyrights to his credit. McCoy died from a heart attack in
Englewood, New Jersey at the age of 39.
God Help the Outcasts – Alan Menken (b. 1949)/ Stephen Schwartz (b. 1948)
‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack’ is the soundtrack to Disney's 1996 animated feature of the
same name. The song is a soft ballad sung by Esmeralda inside Notre Dame after she sees how Quasimodo and her people are treated
by society.
Canto della Terra - Francesco Sartori (b.1957)
The song, which is the second single from Italian pop tenor Andrea Bocelli's 1999 album, Sogno, was written by Francesco Sartori and
Lucio Quarantotto, the same writers of Bocelli's biggest hit Con te partirò, and is among Bocelli's most popular and well-known songs.
Go West - Village People
The song was by the 1970s disco group Village People and eventually found greater success when it was covered in 1993 by the
synthpop duo Pet Shop Boys.
Whenever, Wherever – Gloria Estefan (b. 1957)/Tim Mitchell /Shakira (b. 1977)
A Latin pop song for Shakira’s first English language album, Laundry Service. It is the second most successful song of her career, behind
only Hips Don't Lie. The song is about how fortunate she is to have found a person like the man with whom she is in a relationship.
In a Monastery Garden - Characteristic Intermezzo - Albert William Ketèlbey (1875 –1959)
The work is a famous piece of light classical music composed in 1915 after a visit to a real monastery garden. It was especially successful
when performed by Ronnie Ronalde who often performed it as his finale and sold over a million records.
Vesti la Giubba – Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919)
A famous tenor aria performed as part of the opera Pagliacci, (1892), it is the conclusion of the first act, when Canio discovers his wife's
infidelity, but must nevertheless prepare for his performance as Pagliaccio the clown because the show must go on.
Vivo per lei – (Manzani – Mengalli – Zelli)
The song was orginally written by the group called O.R.O. in 1995 and won the Disco per l'estate edition of that year, but it had no
particular achievement. When relaunched by Italian artist Andrea Bocelli as duet with Giorgia for his album Romanza, the new version
became a tribute to the music.
He’s a Pirate – Klaus Badelt (b. 1967)
Theme taken from the sound-track film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl which tells the story of blacksmith Will
Turner and pirate Captain Jack Sparrow as they rescue the kidnapped Elizabeth Swann from the cursed crew of the Black Pearl,
captained by Hector Barbossa.
Duetto Buffo di Due Gatti – Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868)
The piece was compiled by the English composer Robert Lucas de Pearsall. It consists, of Katte-Cavatine (C.E.F. Weyse), part of the duet
for Otello and Iago in Act 2 of Otello and part of the cabaletta to the aria "Ah, come mai non senti", sung by Rodrigo in the same act.

Glasnost – Dizzy Stratford alias Jacob de Haan (b. 1959)
Glasnost was the policy of maximal publicity, openness, and transparency in the activities of all government institutions in the Soviet
Union, together with freedom of information, introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev in the second half of the 1980s.
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again – Andrew Lloyd Webber (b. 1948)
The musical is based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The song comes from ACT II when Christine visits her
father’s grave.
Think of Me (from The Phantom of the Opera) – Andrew Lloyd Webber (b. 1948)
The musical, which is based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux in 1986, focuses on a beautiful soprano,
Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius known as "The Phantom of the Opera".
‘Oh I Say’ – H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej
This song was composed while His Majesty was residing at his coastal palace, "Klai Kangwol", in Hua Hin. M.R.Seni Pramoj had the
honour to write the English lyrics. This composition became very popular among university students, especially on the occasions when
His Majesty joined them at their student concerts.
Hero - Walter Afanasieff (b. 1958)
The song was recorded for Carey's fourth album, Music Box (1993). Its protagonist declares that even though we may feel discouraged
or down at times, in reality we are "heroes" if we look inside ourselves and see our own inner strength; in time, this will help us "find the
way."
Air for Winds - André Waignein (b. 1942)
Waignein is a Belgian composer of international fame. His music is played throughout Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan and Australia.
A Whole New World - Alan Menken (b.1949)
It is the featured pop single from the soundtrack to the 1992 Disney film Aladdin with lyrics by Tim Rice. The song is a ballad between
the primary characters Aladdin and Jasmine about the new world they are going to discover together
Funiculi Funicula – Luigi Denza (1846-1922)
Denza is an Italian composer and teacher who devoted his efforts to writing some 600 songs, many of which were to attain great
popularity. His best song was Funiculi-funicula (1880) which soon sold more than half-a-million copies.
We Are the Champions – Freddie Mercury (1946-91)
The power-ballad was recorded and performed by British rock band Queen for their 1977 album News of the World. One of their most
famous and popular songs, it has since become an anthem for sporting victories and has been often used or referenced in popular
culture.
The Prayer - David Foster (b. 1949)/Carole Bayer Sager (b. 1944)
It is a duet between Céline Dion and Andrea Bocelli. It is the second single from Dion's Christmas album ‘These Are Special Times’ and
first from Bocelli's album ‘Sogno’.
Innu Studenti Universitarji – Carmelo Pace (1906-93)
It is the official hymn for the University Junior College. Written in 1944 and was awarded first prize in a National Competition organized
by the University Students’ Representative Council. Words in Maltese by Albert M. Cassola.
Mro. Manoel Pirotta graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de
Lyon (1994) and lectures the Matsec music programme. The Research & Advisory Board of
the IBC Cambridge nominated him International Musician of the year for his outstanding
musical achievements (2003). He is a life fellow of this association and contributes
significantly to the standing of the IBA in the worldwide forum. He was awarded the Grand
Prix des Arts for music composition and conducting at the 8th. Malta International Art
Biennale (2007). Pirotta conducted the Catholic Institute Youth Orchestra (1987-9), the
Maltese Youth Orchestra (1994-6), and The Euro Academy Youth Orchestra (2002-8). He is also musical director of
the College Orchestra since 1999. His incidental music – Antony and Cleopatra won him an entry in the
Shakespeare Music Catalogue issued by Victoria College, Canada. It was revised and played by the orchestra Città
di Ravenna (2005). His La Lyonnaise features in Murray MacLachlan’s CD Piano Music from Malta. Other works
are also included in piano anthologies, among which, Kinder Garden and A musical Tribute to Mozart from Malta.
He is also musical director of St. Julian’s Band since 2008.
