Notes for Lesson 1-8: Introduction to Functions
1-8.1 - Graphing Points on the Coordinate plane
Vocabulary:
Coordinate Plane - A plane divided into 4 regions by a horizontal and vertical axis
X-axis - the horizontal axis on a coordinate plane
Y-axis - the vertical axis on a coordinate plane
Origin - the intersection of the x- and y-axis in a coordinate plane
Ordered Pair - a pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane
X-coordinate - the first number in a ordered pair that indicates the horizontal distance a point is from the
origin
Y-coordinate - the second number in a ordered pair that indicates the vertical distance a point is from
the origin
Example: Graph each point
M(3,4)
N(-2,0)
P(2,-3)
T(-2,6)
1-8.2 - Locating points in the Coordinate plane
Vocabulary:
Quadrant - the 4 sections on a coordinate plane created by the x and y axis
Example: Name the quadrant in which each point lies and then name the ordered pair for the point.

1-8.3 - Application
Vocabulary:
Input - The values put into a function
Output - The results of substituting a value into a function
A caricature artist charges his clients a $5 setup fee plus $10 for every person in the picture. Write a
rule (expression) for the artist's fee. Then, write ordered pairs for the artist's fee when there are 1, 2, 3, and 4
people in the picture.

1-8.4 - Generating and graphing ordered pairs
Examples: Generate ordered pairs for each function using the given values for x. Graph the ordered pairs and
describe the pattern
